Denver Post: Twins show interest in signing Fogg

Passeportout…and ready to board.

The winter free-agent market is starting to thaw for Josh Fogg. The Minnesota Twins contacted Fogg’s agent Thursday, and appear serious about adding the veteran right-hander if the Johan Santana deal goes through with the New York Mets.

Fogg went 10-9 with a 4.94 ERA last season for the Rockies, earning the nickname “Dragonslayer” from teammates after beating aces Mike Mussina, Curt Schilling and Brandon Webb. Minnesota is looking to add an experienced pitcher to help stabilize its rotation behind Francisco Liriano.

Fogg confirmed the Twins have expressed interest, but said there has been no offer yet. That could happen as soon as today if Santana completes negotiations with the Mets on a contract extension.

Fogg's a really nice guy, but I can't imagine that this will turn out well.

Hmmm... is that a misspelling or am I not getting it?

No, I think I typed it right. It's just not meant to be funny.

Mussina may be many things, but he was not an ace last year.

Not YOU, Vlad, I thought it was spelled Passepartout. I'm wondering if there's some reason Repoz wrote it that way, or if it's some kind of reference I'm not getting beyond the Verne part of it.

I can see Fogg being pretty average for the Twins, I wonder if that's what's necessary. Are they short on average pitchers?

Dur. OK, got it.

I was blinded by getting the character name and all. I snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Slight groundball pitcher, doesn't walk many, puts up 5-6 innings then turns the ball over to the bullpen, "battles his tail off". Sounds like a prototypical Twin. Put him in front of that defense and he should do pretty well assuming he can keep the ball from going over the baggie. 180 innings of 4.9 ERA is worth quite a bit to the Twins - they have as much uncertainty in the rotation as anyone.

"Put him in front of that defense and he should do pretty well assuming he can keep the ball from going over the baggie."

With the Pittsburgh Fogg, that generally wasn't a safe assumption. He might've made some adjustments since then, I guess.

What's the marginal value of Kyle Lohse over Josh Fogg?

Pitcher TotalIP ERA+ 07IP 07ERA+
KLohse 1164.0 95 192.7 100
JoFogg 1035.0 91 165.7 97

There's a significant chance Fogg is within one win of Lohse next season and he seems to be a better clubhouse guy. If I'm signing a guy to a 3 year deal, I'll sign Lohse but the difference in year to year $$ shouldn't be huge.

What's the knock on Lohse? He seemed to fit in well for Philly last year -- he was a gritty pitcher, if not overwhelming, and you know how we like our gritty players. :)

Lohse loses his cool a lot. Or at least he used to when he was with the Twins. He attacked the manager's door with a bat after one game when he wasn't happy with being taken out. And it always looks like he thinks it is someone else's fault when something bad happens to him. Maybe he's matured since then, but no one was sad to see him leave the Twins.

Kyle Lohse is a whiny little #####.
