Derek Jeter—How Far Will He Climb Up the All-Time Hit Ladder? A Fan’s Prediction - Yahoo! Sports

One projection you can be certain of…I’m not getting any of Derek Jeter’s Avon stuff for Father’s Day.
Happy Father's Day from Derek Jeter

How many more hits would Jeter need to become the all-time leader? Pete Rose retired with 4,256 hits in 24 years, an average of approximately 177 hits per season. Jeter has 3,143 hits in 17 seasons for an average of 185. Of course, the average is skewed a very tiny bit due to partial seasons in 1995 and so far in 2012. However, if we consider just the average, then we can project the rest of Jeter’s career.

He will not break the all-time hits record. Enough with these. He tops out 3,500 or so.

Not bad for a 12-year-old fanboy.

Jeter is 11 and a half years younger than Jamie Moyer. If we assume Jeter's next 11 years are like his last 11, that puts him over 5000 hits.

Calm eyes.

Did you read the article? You're not that far apart. The author says that it's unlikely Jeter catches Rose but predicts him to top out at around 3,700 which is good for 4th place on the all-time list. That still seems a little high but it's not as ridiculous as the excerpt makes it sound.

I hate Derek Jeter and the Yankees and I'm perfectly fine with pushing the idea that he breaks Rose's record on the sheer awesomeness of the possibility.

Breaks the record, spends a year starting at 1B for the Mets, and calls it a career.

Thank you but I would rather not walk around the city smelling like Michael Kay's chicken parm sandwich.

And a life. During that season with the Mets he contracts a terminal illness ("Sprained Ankle Operated on by Mets Medical Staff) and dies. The Mets hold a funeral ceremony for him which commemorates the last season the Dodgers played in Brooklyn.

But he comes back from that with the Royals and, as an ex-Met, throws a no-hitter.

George would close the thread with that line, because you'll never top it.

Tell Derek the first 4,900 hits are easy.

I think we need to see how 2012 plays out before projecting Jeter's career hit total with any confidence. Another 200 hit season propels Jeter to around 11th place, and positions him to make the TOP 5 if he plays out the option year (2014) of his contract. Jeter has hit around .340 since coming off the DL last season, and he will certainly change some assumptions if he can approximate that pace for the whole season.

That said, it seems quite likely that Jeter will pass Molitor (3319) for most hits by a right-handed American League hitter. That's pretty impressive given how long the AL has been around and how many right-handed hitters have played. Jeter is also a good bet to pass Wagner (3420) for most hits while predominantly playing shortstop. More difficult achievements would be topping Aaron (3771) for most hits by a right-handed MLB hitter, and Cobb (3900) for most hits with one team. If he makes that, maybe 4,000 is in range.

Jeter only plays for the Mets if he buys the team - which might give him Rose-like longevity, were he so inclined.

If we assume Jeter's next 11 years are like Moyer's, he'd have an outside chance of making the top ten Yankees in pitching wins. He only needs 131 to catch Allie Reynolds and Moyer had around 120 in that time period.
