Determining Madison Bumgarner’s future will be Farhan Zaidi’s first Giant decision

The ink on Farhan Zaidi’s contract as the new San Francisco Giants general manager was barely dry Wednesday when he was asked the question weighing on the mind of every Giants fan.

Is it possible, and perhaps even necessary, that he seeks to trade the franchise’s longtime ace and multiple time World Series hero, Madison Bumgarner?

The question itself was as straight forward as it gets. As for the response? It was not surprisingly vague.

Mind you, with pitchers, the future tends to be something beyond the ken of any general manager….

This will be interesting. I would opt for trading while you can. He’s been injured and I’m not sure his next few years add value to a giants team that needs to re-tool. On the other hand, it’s just one more year and maybe you get more at the deadline.

I don't think the Giants can trade Bumgarner.

What can they do as a whole? It's possible that generating the highest championship expectancy over the next ten years involves a complete teardown right now. But I don't think that's what they should do, and I don't think they will. Bum, Posey, and Crawford are icons, and these Giants are still recognizable as the group that won 3 rings. Can this group win again? Probably not, but the fans are going to want them to try. Win or lose the fans love this team and this core. Tearing it down now would be an enormous insult.

Really their only option is to slap another coat of paint on this bad boy, run it out there again and hope for the best. And if you're going to do that, you at least need to start the season with Bumgarner. If they crater early, a distinct possibility, then they can probably get away with moving him at the deadline.

They need to retool, but my guess is that at least for now they do it in the background. A 90 loss season would change this equation next offseason though.

The 2018 San Francisco Giants and 2018-19 Chicago Blackhawks look similar. The core of 3-time champions is aging and expensive, and hanging on to the icons may please loyal fans without generating many wins.

Bruce Bochy hopes the comparisons end there.

He’s been injured and I’m not sure his next few years add value to a giants team that needs to re-tool.

His injuries have been a dirt bike accident and a line drive off his finger. For a pitcher, those are the injuries you want to have.
