Detroit News | Tigers seem content to keep Magglio Ordonez

They wouldn’t pull the plug on him now. Or would they?

After months of wondering whether the Tigers were going to let the $18 million option on Magglio Ordonez’s 2010 contract kick in, it’s getting very close to kicking in. And there’s no indication, at this point, the Tigers won’t let it.

Ordonez went into Friday’s game against the Rays needing only 52 more plate appearances for the option to be guaranteed. That’s about 14 games worth; the Tigers have 36 games left.

A month ago, when it appeared he might only face left-handed pitchers the rest of the way as part of a platoon with Clete Thomas, it looked like a plan was in place for the Tigers to play Ordonez, 35, but not enough for his option to vest. If nothing else, it was a relatively graceful way of phasing him out of next year’s plans.

But the platoon stopped. Ordonez stayed in the lineup against right-handers, too. Not all the time, but enough to swing the pendulum away from the likelihood he wouldn’t be back.

In the AP story last night, Inge tells about how he visits sick kids in the hospital and they always ask him for a homer; he hit one last night, his 25th.

Just once I would like to see a sick kid in a hospital say, "Brandon, just give me a few productive outs. And don't clog up the bases."

Man, that's a crushing option. It would have been worth acquiring $3-5M in a salary dump contract on an OF to have had a good excuse to sit Ordonez down.

Wait for Darren Baker to get his tonsils out.

It's an unfortunate option, but it has been clear for a long time that the Tigers had resigned themselves to letting it vest. They announced he would be platooned with the mouth-breathing (not an insult, just a fact, it drives me nuts to just to look at this guy sucking air all the time) Clete Thomas on July 9, not "a month ago". Then Maggs sat for a week. Then the platoon was over. If they were going to try and keep the option from vesting, that was their chance to make a move. For whatever reason, they changed their mind.

All of the wondering about whether they would start sitting him which I've seen in another item posted here the beginning of August and on Fangraphs has been pointless. Good lord, Steve Phillips said a few weeks ago that they had to start sitting him. What more evidence does one need that they aren't going to sit him?

They lead their division. And since getting back into the lineup on July 18, Ordonez has hit 309/393/515.

They are not going to sit him. Stop wondering about it! It was clear a month ago. It did not appear he would be platooned with Thomas a month ago.
