Diamondbacks add Ziegler, Marquis

Feeling they have an even better one on the way, the Diamondbacks traded their starting first baseman to the A’s for a setup man on Sunday.  The three-player deal sent Brad Ziegler to Arizona in return for Brandon Allen and left-hander Jordan Norberto.

Allen had… a .213/.325/.404 line in 178 at-bats with the Diamondbacks over the last three years.  He’s not a surprising A’s target, in that his game is much more about power and walks than batting average.  Unfortunately, he does strike out a lot and he may fall short of being a quality regular as a result.

The move opens up first base in Arizona for Paul Goldschmidt… Goldschmidt was simply dominant in Double-A, hitting .306/.435/.626 with 30 homers and 94 RBI in 366 at-bats.  A right-handed hitter, he’ll probably take over as an everyday player for the Diamondbacks…

Ziegler is very vulnerable to left-handed hitters with his sidearm delivery, but he shuts down right-handers about as well as anyone and he’s yet to allow a homer in 37 2/3 innings this season.  He has a career 2.49 ERA in four seasons since debuting in 2008, and he’s under control through 2014.

The D-Backs also got got Jason Marquis yesterday, for minor league infielder Zach Walters.

Marquis… has a 3.95 ERA in 120 2/3 innings… Walters was posting good numbers in Low-A South Bend, hitting .302 with a .377 on-base and .485 slugging, but several Diamondbacks talent evaluators project him as a utility infielder at the major-league level.

The Diamondbacks will pay all that remains—about $2.5 million—of Marquis’ $7.5 million salary this season.

And for those of you not following closely, yes, the Diamondbacks are in contention!

So are the A's trying to collect as many once touted 1B prospects as possible?

Goldschmidt's power is real, and his strikeout rate isn't excessive (plus he's improved his pitch recognition skills this year). He's definitely the real deal.

Arizona has really hung around longer than I would have thought possible. Who is playing 1B for them right now?

It had been a platoon of Allen and Nady but I'm guessing they're done messing with that and its Goldschmidt time.

Ah right, reading the excerpt, and Mike Emeigh's comment would have helped.

The sound was off in the bar so I don't know what he was saying, but Jason Marquis looked pretty miserable in the lengthy post-trade interview they did with him after last night's game. Maybe he always looks like that.

Having a bench with an average age of 37 is the new market inefficiency.

I was actually quite happy when Juan Miranda was traded to Arizona because I honestly thought he'd be able to hit with good power if he were only given an honest chance at a starting job. I do wish Arizona gave him some more rope but you can't say 40+ starts wasn't a fair trial.

Who drafted that Goldschmidt kid?

213/325/404 would look pretty sweet in our horrible offense, although I'm sad to see Ziegler go.
