Diamondbacks announce Mark Grace and Daron Sutton will not return to the broadcast booth

CAR! and driver…

Daron Sutton and Mark Grace will not return to the Diamondbacks broadcast booth next season, Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall said Thursday morning.

Hall said the team had “philosophical differences” with Sutton, who was suspended after calling the June 20 game against the Seattle Mariners.

In August, Grace received his second DUI in 15 months. Hall said the club had told Grace after the first DUI that they could not keep him if it happened again.

...Grace was first arrested on May 30, 2011. According to police, he had his license suspended and was required to have an interlock device installed in his vehicle. But when Scottsdale police pulled him over again on Aug. 23, they said he was driving with a suspended license and was behind the wheel of a vehicle without an interlock device.

“It was definitely a factor,” Hall said. “We had told him before that if it happened again, we were not going to have him return to the booth. He knew that. We had a conversation about that after the second one.

“We feel terrible for Mark and what he’s going through. He’s obviously got a legal process, as well, on his hands. We hope everything works out for him and we’re here for him, but again he knew that this was going to be a consequence. It just so happens that his contract is up after this year, as well.”

I haven't followed the story much, but do "philosophical differences" still = "wants to wear a suit"?

#2,

Yes.

does "team wants Daron to wear team colors" still = "team wants Daron to be more of a homer"?

Yes. Daron is a good guy and a decent announcer.

I will miss him.

That's pretty absurd. I've always enjoyed Sutton's work. You'd think his enthusiasm for the team would offset his reluctance to plaster Diamondback paraphernalia all over himself.

So they're saying the Diamondbacks have been dis-Graced?

People can watch a baseball game anywhere, okay? They come to Chase Field for the atmosphere and the attitude. That's what the flair's about. It's about fun.

Daron Sutton is absolutely atrocious. I believe the philosophical differences were probably that Sutton thought he didn't suck but the team finally realized the truth. I'm so glad that I won't have to hear that guy anymore (although, who am I kidding, he's the son of a famous broadcaster, half the teams in the league will probably be trying to sign him up). I'm serious, I almost felt nauseous every time I heard Sutton's voice. I just disliked everything about his approach to announcing- the faux-populism, the self-satisfied anti-intellectualism, the bizarre and stupid moral stands (wouldn't say "Damn" even when it was part of a show's name), the cloddsih homerism, etc. Announcers don't get any worse than Daron Sutton. Good riddance.

Grace has always been a train-wreck as an announcer. But he'll likely get a job somewhere. People love a clown.
