Diamondbacks To Sign Oliver Perez

Oliver LOOGYs are signed now.

The Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with left-hander Oliver Perez on a two-year, $4.25MM deal, pending physical. Perez, a client of Scott Boras, will earn $1.75MM for the coming year and $2.5MM in 2015.

Perez, 32, has revitalized his career over the past two seasons as a reliever with the Mariners. He has tallied a 3.16 ERA with 10.7 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 and a 31.8 percent ground-ball rate in 82 2/3 innings in that time. Opposing left-handers have batted .254/.346/.316 against him in that time, while righties have had a tougher time getting on base but slugged at a higher clip with a .237/.309/.411 batting line.

When Kevin Towers just uses money to stock the bullpen, I have no complaints.

Plus it looks like a good signing! Not much money, two years is a good length for a reliever, and Perez has been good the last two seasons.

He was out of baseball for about 15 years, and then reappeared as an effective LOOGY. At least that's how I remember it.

On the Greg Swindell - Darren Oliver path?

Maybe 10 years later, we'll see Perez continue to pitch effective LOOGY innings for a MLB team.

It took awhile, but Oliver Perez, at 31, finally had a season where he was better than Sandy Koufax at the same age.

Didn't Oliver Perez beat Koufax in one of his very early years?

Looking at BR, yes, at age 22 he was definitively better, and probably also at age 20.

He had a 3.74 ERA in 53 innings last year...but if you throw out this one appearance his ERA drops down to 2.73 in 52.1 innings.

With the Mets, I don't remember him confining his suck to a small number of appearances.
