I think the Mets' bullpen can greatly benefit from having 2 days off.

An off-day LET'S GO METS!

I don't know about the Mets' bullpen, but I know that my heart can benefit from them having 2 days off.

If 23-year-old Miguel Andújar has an extra-base hit in his next game, he'll be entering some rarified Yankees air. He's had an extra-base hit now in six straight games. According to Elias, the only Yankees with longer such streaks before their 24th birthdays were Mickey Mantle (seven games in May 1955) and Joe DiMaggio (seven in June 1937). Andújar will turn 24 next March.

It's great to be young and a Yankee, once again.

Today is the Cubs's 7th day off this season.

I didn't check every team, but the Astros have already played 23 games, the Twins only 16.

Imagine what it'll be like if they make it all the way to second place at some point (gotta get the shots in while we can).

Jose sees karma, makes eye contact, charges towards it, and kicks it in the balls.

Tell you what: Take your pick of any Red Sox starting infielder, and I say that barring injury, Andujar will have outperformed him at season's end.

Ryan Spilborghs just tweeted that Jenny Cavnar will be doing PBP on the Rockies telecast tonight, becoming the third woman in history to do so. Good for her, I've heard her on talk radio and she really knows her stuff.

Only nine games tonight, but I’m at one of them: Oakland at Texas, kind of irrelevant in the grand scheme. But it’s high 70s, mostly clear, it’s a ballpark and there’s beer. God Bless America.
   11. BDC Posted: April 23, 2018 at 06:45 PM (#5658703)
I get my first look tonight at Ronald Guzman, the Rangers’ rookie first baseman who has hit well in AAA.

I was noticing that the visiting players seemed quite different from yesterday’s lineup, and then I remembered that they are a different team. Yesterday it was the Seattle Mariners.

You can't really be blamed for reflexively thinking that maybe half of the A's had been traded since yesterday. It's at least plausible.

David Wells Perfect Game Bobblehead Night @ Yankee Stadium, with Boomer himself on hand to throw out the ceremonial 1st pitch. Surely, the stars are aligned for a W.

Ok, so Mauer tries to bunt vs. The Shift. Does he get nailed later then ? Unwritten rules and such ?
I thought I heard something about that, but I'm not sure if it was meant as a joke.
   16. BDC Posted: April 23, 2018 at 07:22 PM (#5658728)
It was quite real yesterday, with Joey Gallo bunting (foul) and getting plunked on the next pitch. Maybe a coincidence ...
   17. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 23, 2018 at 07:34 PM (#5658732)
Gary Sanchez 2-run double puts Yankees ahead in 1st. Sanchez started slow, but has looked good the last 10 days or so.

EDIT: Aaron Hicks RBI single, 3-0, still in 1st.

EDIT, EDIT: Inning over, Twins pitch count = 34.
   18. Perry Posted: April 23, 2018 at 07:35 PM (#5658734)
Memphis Redbird (Cardinals) Austin Gomber put up a 8 6 0 0 0 16 line vs. Iowa today, most Ks in a PCL game since 2007. 112 pitches, 85 strikes.

And their bullpen gave up 14 runs to the Rays over that 3 game weekend sweep.

Yankees 3B Brandon Drury (blurred vision) saw his specialist this morning, and they had a few firmer answers for him. Doctors believe the vision problem was the result of a tendon in his neck that's been blocked. They'll treat it using stimuli and some acupuncture-like treatments. Drury will be playing in a rehab game Wednesday in Scranton. As for getting Drury back as Miguel Andújar remains hot at third, Aaron Boone said, "I like having the problem" of figuring out how to get both playing time.

Reportedly, Drury has been battling blurred vision for a couple of years, which would seem like a significant problem if you're trying to hit Major League pitching. If cured, he might be a bit better, but he may already be in the process of being Wally Pipped.

Miguel Andujar HRs, joining Joe DiMaggio & Mickey Mantle as the only Yankees under 24 with extra-base hits in 7 straight games. Good company there. 4-0.
   23. rconn23 Posted: April 23, 2018 at 07:56 PM (#5658742)
I feel bad for Drury, but he's going to have a rough time getting playing time with Andujar tearing it up. Just hit a bomb. Quick hands. Quick.

Wells told a funny story today on NYC radio (well, he told several).

he said it was the first day of spring training, and he had some facial hair. Cashman tells him Torre wants to see him, so Wells says to just wait a minute - he'd go into the men's room and shave it off.

Cashman says no, go in now. Torre says they have to wait a moment for others to arrive.

Wells said, "Wait, have I been traded? Because if so, anywhere is ok but Toronto."

"Who told you?" Torre asked.

yep, it was Toronto - Wells previously had been ignominiously released there, and didn't care for management.

Jed Lowrie either not very fast or very adventurous on a 2-out drive off the wall in CF that DeShields didn’t get to with great alacrity. Lowrie settles for a double but the next batter makes out, so much of a muchness.
   28. BDC Posted: April 23, 2018 at 08:28 PM (#5658754)
Joey Gallo in LF tonight - I know from his stat line Gallo seems like he should field like Greg Luzinski, but he is fast, agile, and has a strong arm. The very fact that he’s coped with being shuffled around the diamond while learning to hit in the majors speaks well of his athleticism.

I'll take "what are obscure stats no one cares about" for $200 Alex.

Andujar now at 327/.345/.673, 1.018 OPS. This is his 5th game with multiple extra-base hits, which according to YES leads the league. That's in only 14 games.
   36. BDC Posted: April 23, 2018 at 09:21 PM (#5658777)
My gosh, there can’t be 7,500 people here tonight. This crowd is sparse.

The Reds' leader in WAR is Eugenio Suarez, who's only played 8 games this year and is currently on the DL.

Why, it’s so sparse, you could yell “Fire!” and not meet the standard elucidated in Schenck v. United States (1919).

Not to be an old fogey, again, but mlb.com really has loose standards for what gets a large, red, bold DEVELOPING banner across the top of its page.

Right now: DEVELOPING: Yoan Moncada of the White Sox a single short of the cycle vs. Mariners

I had my hopes up for at least another no-hitter, or maybe a perfect game. Sigh. Life is difficult, let me tell ya.
   46. Dale Sams Posted: April 23, 2018 at 10:16 PM (#5658799)
Dodger announcers just gave me a humorous idea....to determine the outcome of an overturned call, you duplicate the game conditions. An ump rolls the ball to Puig and the runner can decide if he wants to try for second from first.

I was just fixing to say, put the A’s down here and somebody hit a walkoff in the bottom of the 9th ... when Semien hits a leadoff HR. Most of the remaining Ranger fans depart.

Fan behind me, after a swinging strike by Lowrie: “He shoulda thrown that changeup awhile ago, when that guy hit it 500 feet.” Well, if he’d known he would have hit it 500 feet, he would have thrown the changeup.

The A’s bat around, score run after run, and hilariously, after every run another 500 fans stream to the exits ... I can’t imagine there were that many fans left to bail.

I was at the game in which Josh Hamilton single-handedly won the MVP in one game. When the Rangers started to mount a come-back, I looked at the Rangers fans who had little interest at that point and said, "You know you're going to win this game right?? (I know my team)

When Wakefield took the mound I started gathering my stuff. One pitch. Blam. Walk-off.

I like Rangers fans.
