Dishin’ with Dutch: A B&C Interview with Darren Daulton

Remember when the Jupiter 2 was stranded on Gnarth-4 and those furry beasts were jumping on the roof with their gleepers hanging out?! Now that was funny!

What were your impressions of the Mark McGwire steroids confession?

I always thought the whole thing was pretty comical. I think it gives a real good pulse of the American people and what we perceive as this big military, industrial, world-wide, number-one country that presented itself in a manner that turned on one of their own and just really collapsed like a house of cards. I mean, if I was a foreign country and wanted to take over this country, I’d get a prescription for steroids and stand at the border and wave them, and then watch the American people fold.

I thought it was pretty comical, it seemed like there were 250 million victims out there, so that was the comical part. I think it was all just useless, but it did give us a pretty good read on what our society is like.

Do you have any comments on rumors that former teammates Dykstra and Dave Hollins used them?

No. Heck, no, I could care less, there are a lot more important things in the world, and again, this is useless information. What does it do? What has all of this done? Finding out whether or not a guy does steroids or not, I could never understand this. There are a lot of things that a lot of people do behind closed doors that they probably don’t want the public to know about. Whether you’re cheating on your wife, your husband, or you’re doing drugs, you don’t want your boss to know about something, you’re hiding something from somebody, or you’re watching porn and you’re masturbating. Whatever it is, everybody’s got one of these or they wouldn’t be here, but it seems like everybody gets to cast the first stone when somebody else is caught doing something, or allegedly caught. It makes them feel better, and again, this is kind of the pulse of the American ego, as long as we can point our finger at somebody, we’re okay, we feel better about ourselves.

I think it’s useless information. Out of all this, who cares? What’s it going to matter? It really doesn’t. You know what you’re going to find out, is that they’re just like you are.

The fact that one of the biggest nuts in the hemisphere is saying the most sensible things about steroids probably means something, though what it is I have no idea.

Silence, you bumbling ninny!

Oh, the pain! The pain!

The fact that one of the biggest nuts in the hemisphere is saying the most sensible things about steroids probably means something, though what it is I have no idea.

At any rate, Daulton has been working on his Stengelese, hasn't he?

OK, who killed the Coakley thread?

The same genius who hasn't figured out how to delete a handful of over the top posts without zapping the entire thread. The same genius who not only had to single out one flamethrower out of hundreds for banning, but just to get the point across had to delete all of his previous posts as well. But then again, it's his website, and that's all there really is to say about it.

you’re watching porn and you’re masturbating.

Is Darren Daulton some kind of wizard!

I wonder if there's a single player left who played in the last 25 years who hasn't opined on steroids yet.

We're still waiting on Dion James, I think.

Do steroids cause drain bramage because DD must have been the biggest steroider of 'em all. He sure looked the part.

I know from personal experience that this isn't true. They know how to remove an individual post. When they decide to lock or kill an entire thread, it's because they want to.

Exactly right, Joey. The thread is still intact, BTW, but has been closed to the public.

That is something I've never understood. Locking a thread yes, completely hiding it, no.

If the threads are being hidden because they're deemed too embarrassing or offensive to be seen, then perhaps they shouldn't be allowed to start in the first place, but the political flame wars have been overtly encouraged for years now, so the whole "policy" is hypocritical in the extreme.
   13. Lassus Posted: January 18, 2010 at 06:45 PM (#3440261)
I admit, I'd find locking the thread to make far more sense myself. No one can comment on it, it gets some lingering attention, then vanishes into the sub-ether. Now it's just a martyr thread, and that never works out well.

Have they been? I suppose they make a few people click, so there's that, but my inkling is that the vast majority of the users of the site avoid those threads like the plague.

Just like baseball's stance on steroids.

There have been quite a few links posted that had a tenuous at best connection to baseball and anybody with at least a little bit of common sense could see that they were posted for the political squabble they would create.

hm, looks like there's been a lot of interesting activity over the weekend. would anybody mind giving me a brief synopsis? just to satisfy my curiosity.

Though i agree with DD that a lot of the hype and sensationalism behind steroid admissions is the "finding salacious inside damning evidence" of a famous person, I think equating affairs and masturbation with taking illegal drugs that may impact ones performance in a sport many people love and follow is a bit naive. Unfortunately there is so much of the voyeuristic moralizing, that it can be hard for many to admit that there are real issues to be confronted.

Apparently we have different definitions of "sensible" :-) ... for example:

I mean, if I was a foreign country and wanted to take over this country, I’d get a prescription for steroids and stand at the border and wave them, and then watch the American people fold.

If I was a foreign country I would be Rwanda, because they have a cool flag.
Rwanda was actually my favourite country as a kid for that reason.
Of course I also chose Greg Maddux as my favourite player because I wanted to pick a middling level player, and when I realized I was wrong on that I went to Craig Biggio. So I had rather poor judgement as a kid.

I figured as much. I was enjoying myself, but things had become pretty circular. No one was altering their opinions.

Daulton's sentiments echo my own. I'm also pretty big on the world suddenly vanishing in 2012.

If you ain't first, you're a loser. My elderly father used to think that the only reason anybody wanted internet access was because they were too lazy to go to the bookstore to buy a "Penthouse".

Rwanda changed its flag since we were kids. The big R is gone. The new one does have a nice blue color that's unusual in African flags though.

My oldest, very opinionated sister, was asked to leave Rwanda after 1 year in the Peace Corps back in the early 80s. She claims it was because she wouldn't pass the lazy sons of generals -- I guess she taught English.

She served in Mali for her second year. I don't know if that was punishment or not. She did like the Malians better (Malians? Maliites? Maliables?)

Really?
That's a shame. I remember I used to be able to rattle off all the flags, but with additions like Slovenia and Eritrea God knows what's what. And while we're at it, what was wrong with Upper Volta? Kick ass name.

I've always thought Botswana had a unique blue in their flag
