when watching Gameday and Panda is at bat, the figure standing on the plate always makes me laugh, as I assume that is not him... but his lunch.

well, the giants are awake.

WE WILL SEE YOU TOMORROW NIGHT
   406. Gamingboy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:40 PM (#4262385)
Wow, Panda. That was a dramatic late-inning home run by virtue of it's extreme distance.
   407. Lassus Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:40 PM (#4262386)
Oh dear. And here I thought the Reds were going to walk away with this series.

####. Some one call me when pitchers and catchers report.

#396. The reds are carrying 7 pen arms, and arrendondo is probably the worst one. He's managing this game and the last one like it's rhe god damn regular season.
Gotcha. He was pretty good overall this season - was it mostly in low-lev?

(Obviously he sure wasn't the right guy to pick today. That counts for something, too.)
   410. Lassus Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:41 PM (#4262390)
I am now rooting against the Giants solely because of the Panda's vomiterric haircut.
   411. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:42 PM (#4262391)
I typed comment # 402 when he first came to bat, just in case. Now I am going to have to do that the rest of the playoffs, or it will be a jinx.
   412. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:42 PM (#4262392)
This series is a good example of how home field advantage in baseball isn't nearly a big enough advantage to justify all the whining about the 2-3 series.

   416. hokieneer Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:43 PM (#4262398)
#409. The reds just have much better options. Yes jose was mainly used in situations like these in the regular season.

Hoover, broxton, marshall or hell simon would have been preferred.
   417. Moe Greene Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:45 PM (#4262400)
Don't be fooled by Arredondo's sub-3 ERA. He frequently teetered on the brink of disaster in his appearances this year (as you might expect from someone who walks 5 per 9).
   418. cardsfanboy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:45 PM (#4262401)
This series is a good example of how home field advantage in baseball isn't nearly a big enough advantage to justify all the whining about the 2-3 series.

It's sad that there is a need to explain this to people. Homefield doesn't matter nearly as much in baseball post season as in other sports.

#415 As I was at the game, this is the kind of game I was hoping for...

Not even popup pence coming to bat can cause me to swear at the moment though....

it's the 1.377 whip by a reliever that should make one take notice. I wouldn't trust any reliever with over a 1.200 whip.
   422. Moe Greene Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:49 PM (#4262407)
Is Ondrusek on the postseason roster? I'd actually trust him less than Arredondo.

But other than that, hokieneer is on-point.

Cairo's appearance makes me realize that it won't be long before we start counting down the guys who played in the 1900s.

I count 67 active (in 2012) players who played in MLB in the 1900s.

If we lose Vizquel, Thome(?), Miguel Batista, Chipper and Darren Oliver for 2013, that would leave ARod ('94) as the longest-lasting player.

The class of '95 (8 current players) has some back-from-the-dead types in Suppan, Izzy, and Pettitte. I think Suppan's seen his last mound but Izzy and Pettitte both still seem effective...
   425. hokieneer Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:51 PM (#4262411)
Latos pitched 4 innings of game one. Today leake and jose combined for 5. Huge difference.

I'm just glad dusty hasnt over used the horses in the pen. We'll need them tomorrow with a near ace that usually goes 6 or 7 plus arroyo and Bailey to back him up.
   426. dr. scott Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:51 PM (#4262412)
22 strikes and 7 balls is a very different pitcher than we saw in the regular season. Go Timmy...

Oh great now he will throw 4 straight to Votto to make me look stupid...
   427. Gamingboy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:53 PM (#4262413)
Clearly, Timmy has missed his calling and is actually meant to be the second coming of the elite long reliever.
   428. Moe Greene Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:53 PM (#4262414)
If only Cueto hadn't gotten hurt and could've pitched today... Ugh.
   429. Steve Treder Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:54 PM (#4262415)
popup pence

He hits popups? I haven't noticed many of those. I have noticed eight million weaka$$ groundballs, and another eight million swingthrough strike threes.

Based on today? Yeah, probably.

Probably, and sensibly, but on the other hand, he's been so effective in both of these long relief appearances, I might be tempted to just have him handle this role. It's a valuable weapon to have in postseason circumstances in which you want to have a struggling starter on a very short leash.

Of course you can. That's what they did in all three rounds in 2010. Zito was never on the active roster in that postseason.

I am with you Steve. But if we have 2010 Timmy back, I like that 1-2.

Another question is do you start the hot Arias tomorrow night and bench Crawford. I say yes, but I worry that the bench is getting thin, when you are carrying Huff over there.
   444. esseff Posted: October 10, 2012 at 07:14 PM (#4262437)
The options for the Giants to add a roster reliever aren't great, but they could dump Zito for a little speed off the bench.

No, you can take a guy off the active roster for one round, and put him back on for the next. It's only if you DL a guy and have him replaced during a round that he's ineligible for the next round.

so the second baseman served buck a good coffee this morning in his regular job as a barista so buck put him in the lineup as a thank you?

And then the new stadium came, and ruined everything by pricing out the madmen and replaced them with, well, Mad Men.

I haven't been paying a lot of attention. Have they panned the stands? Empty seats?

Tverik...the inner ring of legends seats is predictably half empty

It's a nice night, at least here in CT. That usually means a nice night in NY. If they can't fill the place tonight in a playoff game, can they ever fill it? It's like we're Atlanta fans.

Now that I think about it, that quote about replacing madmen with Mad Men can't possibly be original, right?

Right?

The way the Yankees look at the plate, they joylessly come up, get 0-2, and then either strike out or hit into a double play, whichever kills a bit more of my soul.

Looks like Jones misjudged that ball.
   495. Gamingboy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 08:31 PM (#4262501)
Argh. That was all jet-stream.

Calm eyes.

Sigh. Would've been a nice play, but Jones should have caught that.

Terrible defense by Jones there, right? C'mon!
