Some bald men look like they're bald because they lost their hair. Some bald men look like they're bald because they've chosen to remove their hair. And some bald men look like they're bald because they have an illness. Raul Ibanez is the third type of man.

A-Rod does tend to have bad luck with these things. Leaves the Mariners, they win 116 games. Joins the Yankees, they have the greatest collapse in history. He struggles in the playoffs, the guy who PH for him hits two consecutive homers to turn a sure loss into a win.

He's had an amazing career. Just weird coincidences.

Well, this is true, of course. How legendary it becomes will be dependent on future events, but I'm not sure they need to win the World Series. Aaron Boone is a postseason legend forever, and they lost to the Marlins. Similarly, Bobby Thomson and the '51 Giants. (Note: Regardless of what happens, this performance could never be as legendary as either of those, because as I noted this is Division Series Game 3, but still...)

Speaking of Bobby Thomson, where would he rank in the WPA if that game was considered a playoff game. My guess would be #2 or #3? They were down two runs, but there was only one out, so...

Considering that every Yankee fan will have to see that homer replayed 1,000 times before they die, thank god it was a pretty one. Would've looked better in the old place, though.

I always knew this was going 5 games. It would've been more comfortable to do it the other way, but it's never easy.

This is now the worst game I've been to at Yankee stadium (although the Yankee fans were totally fine).

Adam Jones won this game for the Yankees.

In the old place Adam Jones would have gotten his bubble gum stuck in Miller Huggins' monument stone while Ibanez hobbled around the bases.

Other WPAs higher than Ibanez include Art Nehf, at least if you don't dock him for hitting, and, naturally, Babe Ruth.
   889. Austin Posted: October 10, 2012 at 11:34 PM (#4262944)

Surprisingly low (though still a very good score). As you note, there was only one out, and the tying runs were in scoring position.
