NOT Conradian. That was a hard-hit ball through the shadows that was rightly deemed a hit. In fact, probably a good play overall, runner might have gone to third if not for him stopping the ball.
   303. McCoy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 04:56 PM (#4262219)
Nothing is over until I say it is over.

I'm something like 5-0 or 6-0 when declaring the game over.

Did the Reds in the first constitute a 2 out rally, they tied the game, but do the walks make it as a rally?

Eh, I don't think walks make it count, especially so early in the game.

5 LOB in 2 innings.

Wait, I was gone for a second, are you saying that A WILD BRIAN WILSON APPEARED?

man joey is hitting everything to left. he can still hit but the knee must be killing him as he has no ability to turn much less generate any torque

that and like i wrote last night and a few weeks back he has lost weight. any reds fans know the scoop? did votto catch the flu or something? he looks way too lean

Ludwick go boom.

That is just terrible pitching

The Luddites going nuts.

The guy totally sucks, no good team should have him on the roster (rolling my eyes since we don't have emoticons)

Watching Zito pitch is maddening.

stubbs has some pop. he could easily crank one out on zito

   319. hokieneer Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:22 PM (#4262256)
#317, HW

And Bochey quickly goes to the pen. 5 innings from the pen last night. Will need 6+ tonight.
   320. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:22 PM (#4262258)
I really wanted to see Zito do well today. He drives me crazy and is not good anymore, but he has taken his demotion in 2010 with class and I was wishing time would turn back for just one afternoon. Oh well one more year before that contract is up.

Kontos's ball-strike kont is...

   322. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:23 PM (#4262262)
ludwick is the latter day hitters version of red ruffing in that put him on bad teams in tough parks and he plays worse than he is. put him on a good team in a good park for power and he's a tough out

he looked so lost in san diego and pittsburgh i left bad for him.
   323. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:25 PM (#4262263)

Did Gregor Blanco just try out his oppo power stroke?

Kid, you hit a home run, but you are still Gregor Blanco.
   329. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:33 PM (#4262275)
George Kontos? Wasn't he a regular on "Kojak"?

He misread the checklist. He thought it said

Gregor Blanco does something awesome [ ]
   331. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:37 PM (#4262280)
I assume folks have covered this from various issues, but is Lincecum's problem simply that he can't throw his good stuff out of the stretch?

740 OPS, 3:1 K:BB with bases empty
804 OPS, 1.5:1 K:BB with runners on
887 OPS, 1.1:1 K:BB with RISP

The even worse RISP split wouldn't be explained here, and neither would Lincecum's runners on splits not breaking down perfectly by windup/no-windup base-out situations.
   332. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:38 PM (#4262282)
Conradian [X]

Edit -extra points for it being a second baseman
   333. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:39 PM (#4262284)
It's a little early for Conradian, no? Or did everyone decide Conradian just meant "fielding error"?

It's a little early for Conradian, no? Or did everyone decide Conradian just meant "fielding error"?

Conradian is supposed to be on a simple play. I missed the error (stupid "rest of the world"), what exactly happened?
   335. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:40 PM (#4262287)
It's borderline too early, but let the discussion begin
   336. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:41 PM (#4262288)
It wasn't a simple play, mostly. Leake hit the ball straight into the ground, it took a huge hop nearly to the outfield grass. Scutaro should have charged and caught it on the fly, he tried to play the (difficult) short hop and muffed it.
   337. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:42 PM (#4262289)
He backed up on a bouncing ball and then booted it when it short hopped him
   338. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:45 PM (#4262293)
Does Bochy have someone up for Ludwick? Mijares is not an effective pitcher against RHB.
   339. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:46 PM (#4262296)
Oh, he can bring in Lincecum on the double-switch. NL ball!

Lincecum isn't the guy I'd want out there in a leveraged situation with runners on. With Leake on second, maybe he can just say #### it and go to the windup?
   340. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:46 PM (#4262297)
He's got the Franchise ready, this should be fun.
   341. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:47 PM (#4262298)
Exactly what I was thinking Matt - don't pitch from the stretch
   342. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:50 PM (#4262299)
Bochy's on his fourth pitcher already, in the fourth inning. How many is he carrying? I guess Lincecum can go a few innings.
   343. Gamingboy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:51 PM (#4262300)
Tim Lincecum will stay in for awhile, I figure.
   344. The Chronicles of Reddick Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:51 PM (#4262301)
Bochy is using the old inning per pitcher ploy and it worked
   345. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:53 PM (#4262302)
Bochy still has Romo, Lopez, Casilla, Affeldt, and Mota in the pen. That's several innings of pitching, and Affeldt can go for a while if needed, I assume.
   346. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:54 PM (#4262303)
You gotta play tomorrow, hope Bochy doesn't have to use Johnny Wholestaff until then.
   347. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:55 PM (#4262304)
Cut away from the goddam interview when baseball happens.

Nice job by Pagan, taking 2b took some of the pressure off Arias

And, if it should come to that, he could probably spot in Bumgarner as a loogy against Votto or Bruce.
   351. Lassus Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:56 PM (#4262309)
Well, the players the Mets jettisoned are sure doing well.
   352. esseff Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:58 PM (#4262312)
Same complaint I had about Jay in the earlier game. Scutaro's a good enough hitter to take a shot at right field and move the runner that way, even if he makes an out.
   353. Gamingboy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:58 PM (#4262313)
Has a position player ever pitched in the postseason?

Not that I know of, although I think the 18-inning game between Atlanta and Houston was apparently close to it: if Clemens got too tired or got hurt, they'd have had no pitchers left because the only one left was in Atlanta preparing for a possible Game 5.
   354. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:58 PM (#4262314)
And, if it should come to that, he could probably spot in Bumgarner as a loogy against Votto or Bruce.
I mean, if you absolutely absolutely have to. But I'd bet that he's thinking of Bumgarner as his long relief cover for Cain if he has to go Johnny Wholestaff today and Cain doesn't have it tomorrow.
   355. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 10, 2012 at 05:59 PM (#4262316)

Was assuming he would save Affeldt for that, so that would leave one less arm to get through the other outs. I am more worried about Lud right now

Same complaint I had about Jay in the earlier game. Scutaro's a good enough hitter to take a shot at right field and move the runner that way, even if he makes an out.
Absolutely. The previous two players hit Leake hard. Give Scut a chance. (I wouldn't be surprised if the bunt were Scutaro's choice. Lots of players really like bunting the guy over to third, and he's a good bunter.)
   357. Bourbon Samurai in Asia Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:02 PM (#4262319)
Phone did not work at the park, which is just as well since I just would have been whining. Still, win tomorrow and it is a winner take all with Gio on the bump. At least I got a new hat.

Did the Reds put Cueto on the DL?
   358. Good cripple hitter Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:03 PM (#4262320)
Yeah, Cuerto got DLed and Leake was activated to make the start today.

I don't believe so. I think they still hope he can pitch in the next series, if they make it.
   361. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:06 PM (#4262323)

I was distracted, but I assume this was the rain-soaked Pedro 6-inning one? I remember watching that game and thinking baseball couldn't get any better.

This game single-handedly rescued my baseball fandom. I was growing bored with the game until that little dude bled his way through those six innings.
   369. esseff Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:12 PM (#4262334)
Yeah, I think Lincecum's going to be in a while. The better question would be if he's up with one out and runners on the corners.
   370. Gamingboy Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:13 PM (#4262335)
Lincecum is there for the long haul.

Sure, channel LaRussa and have him bunt. :)
   373. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:15 PM (#4262340)
Obviously there are innumerable aspects of that appearance that make it great. But if I had to pick one, it'd be the way Pedro figured out in under 10 pitches that he had to work backwards off his curve (his #3 pitch), and he immediately knew just how to do it.
   374. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 10, 2012 at 06:17 PM (#4262342)
I think if he'd have had 3 more innings, he'd have thrown a no-hitter that day.

Cairo having value is the most surprising thing I think I will see today. I remember when I first found this board, in am thinking about 2004? Yankee fanboys ranting about him on here was some of the most entertaining stuff.

Dusty's pen mngt. infuriates me.
How so? (Asking honestly, not 100% on top of their personnel or recent usage.)
