I enjoy the ad with the people standing in line (ostensibly at an Apple store) waiting for The Next Big Thing, while the Samsung guy shows them what they won't be getting.

Well you're a poopy head -- owner of iphone5 :-)
   403. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:46 PM (#4258198)
Harper scares me, he absolutely feasted on Cardinals pitching this year. .429,.484,.750,1.234 over 7 games, 31 pa. Only 2 hrs and 6 rbi though...

My brother can't remotely understand what is the purpose of touching the phones to transfer playlists... you can do that with pretty much any phone that has bluetooth, you don't have to waste time touching them.

As with past years of TBS playoff baseball, I remain impressed with Dick Stockton's lucidity. Maybe he actually likes baseball and just phones it in for football.
   406. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:50 PM (#4258204)
That's the Near-Field Communications modem in the back of the phone. It's a Star Trek-like very close range Bluetooth data radio intended for point-of-sale transactions. Playlists probably are more meaningful to the general population at this stage, though. Mine has the hardware, but no way to do anything with it.

Does football even need announcers? I guess to fill the 3 hours of inaction for the 11 minutes of play, but it's not like the casual fan really cares about the game, except to how it relates to their fantasy team or to ##### about the refs. :)

I think Samsungs are probably legitimately better than iPhones but for the majority of us we don't use all the features so that stuff is not that important.
   409. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:52 PM (#4258207)
Wainwright has one of the best curveballs in the game, but his biggest weakness as a pitcher is when he falls in love with it and relies on it.
   410. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:52 PM (#4258208)
Good day for the pitchers so far.

I don't think that first part is up for debate to be honest.

The sales guy in that Silverado commercial is not enthusiastic about swiping his hand through the mud.
   413. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:54 PM (#4258211)
I'm not saying the Cardinals don't make this mistake from time to time, but from my experience as a fan, it's fun to see how rarely the Cardinals pitchers forget to cover the bag(or get there late) in comparison to other teams.
   414. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:56 PM (#4258213)
Good day for the pitchers so far.

For pitchers not named "Gio". Both he and Wainwright have almost the same pitch count starting this inning.
   415. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:57 PM (#4258214)
That drives me nuts. In the early game Fister was a bit lazy covering the bag on a ball Fielder botched and Pennington almost beat it. Grounder tithe right side, just get there.
   416. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 04:57 PM (#4258215)
Amazes me how many bats thrown into the stands somehow manage to drop harmlessly between people and rows of seats.

Ouch, in both respects, Waino with 82 pitches after 5 innings is usually indicative of him having a less than stellar game.
   418. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:00 PM (#4258218)
The announcer should stop mentioning the shadows,he's going to be accused of whining by Reds/Brewers fans for stating facts.
   419. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:01 PM (#4258220)
I really liked Busch when I was there in 2007 (I think that was the year).
   420. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:04 PM (#4258224)
Was going to say earlier that as wild as Gio has been, the ump has given a couple of wide strikes. But Beltran got a huge break on that 2-2 pitch.
   421. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:04 PM (#4258226)
#417 - I got Robothal'd. Gio had yet to pitch an equivalent number of innings starting the 5th so misleading. He just threw pitch #101 to walk Beltran, so there's that.
   422. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:07 PM (#4258229)
I want to thank Gio for allowing me to relive the Daisuke Matsuzaka experience.
   423. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:07 PM (#4258231)
A base hit to the outfield scores Jay unless a perfect play is made. Or it's a one bouncer to the outfielder.

Uggh, this game has to be frustrating to be a National's fan. It's bad enough for your team to be pressured, but constantly not even allowing the batters or fielders in on the game is annoying as heck.
   424. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:10 PM (#4258233)
No runs, but with the effort that Laroche put into that catch, I would have laughed if it bounced off his palm.
   425. Guts Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:11 PM (#4258234)
Sigh. Gio can't throw strikes all day, and Cards keep letting him off the hook. As soon as Waino gives up the lead here, game over.
   426. salvomania Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:11 PM (#4258235)
Gio earned his pay in getting out of that 5th without allowing a run, putting away two very tough hitters with runner(s) in scoring position.
   427. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:11 PM (#4258236)
#423b - Hell, I already had my baseball orgasm when the Nats won the NL East. Everything else is gravy at this point. Of course I'd love them to go all the way, but I have to temper my enthusiasm as they seemed to be wearing down a good bit toward the end, especially the pitching staff. I don't think they'll make it past Wainwright nor Gio's meltdown today, but the future is pretty close to 50-50 in my totally uninformed opinion.

Hmmm. The Nats hitting coach bears an uncanny resemblance to David Eckstein. Wonder why?
   428. DKDC Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:13 PM (#4258239)
What channel will Yanks-Os be on if this game is not over?
   429. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:14 PM (#4258241)
428. In the past, TNT. Dunno for sure.

yup TNT

Will the Orioles game be delayed by rain? I know it was cloudy and forecast to rain early in the game.

Thanks.

Jesus, enough with the shadows. It's a legitimate point and they gave some real instructive replays earlier but...we get it.
   435. salvomania Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:18 PM (#4258249)
Wainwright's curve is a weapon against the free swingers.... 10 Ks now in 5-2/3 innings

   437. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:23 PM (#4258254)
Neither pitcher seems to have any idea at all where the ball is going. Cardinals have done better job so far of laying off pitches diving out of the zone.

But, really, yeah, seems like a likely but maybe not situation.

Whew, what a relief! Pitcher.
   441. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:27 PM (#4258259)
OK, there must be some force shield around home plate pushing balls away from the plate.

Lynn pitched in ten postseason games last year. I think theCards have some idea how he'll react.
   444. Lassus Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:29 PM (#4258263)
I wonder how Lynn feels pitching to his doppelganger.

EDIT: I guess it affected Werth more.

Squander.
   446. salvomania Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:30 PM (#4258265)
Wicked breaking ball by Lynn to K Werth with the bases loaded...huge pitch!!!
   447. Guts Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:30 PM (#4258266)
Lynn almost really blew that inning, but nice K of Werth.

I realize more runs is a lot to ask for, but I would feel more comfortable.
   448. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:30 PM (#4258267)
Remember when Werth was dangerous in that situation? Yeah, I don't either.

Tarp on the field, raining hard.

Someone somewhere reported that the rain is supposed to let up by 9 PM-ish?
   451. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:33 PM (#4258271)
Now that I think of it, why in the world was the A's/Tigers game the early game...yes I know honestly ratings, but realistically the league needs to get over that fetish.

You have four games today, one with two east coast teams, one with an east coast and a central team, two with a central and west coast team...and your decision is to put one of the west/central teams in the earliest game...yep. a big FU to the fans.
   452. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:34 PM (#4258272)

Unnamed government sources say: 6:01 PM
   453. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:35 PM (#4258273)
451 - there may also be a competitive advantage situation at work too. I know west coast teams in the NFL have a pretty bad record when playing the 1pm game on the east coast.not saying that why Oakland lost but you're right, no reason it couldn't have been later, hell switch it with this game.
   454. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:36 PM (#4258275)
Really, cfb, we're used to baseball and, especially, football games starting early when played on Eastern time. Usually 10 a.m., though, which is routine for NFL games.
   455. Guts Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:37 PM (#4258278)
2 playoff games - 2 leaping catches at the wall against the Cards.
   456. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:37 PM (#4258279)
Surprised Werth didn't lose that ball in the **shadows**
   457. salvomania Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:38 PM (#4258280)
Werth's being 7 feet tall really helped there.
   458. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:38 PM (#4258281)
I think that was getting out
   459. VoodooR Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:38 PM (#4258282)

   462. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:38 PM (#4258285)
Surprised he held onto the ball way down in the palm of his glove when the glove bumped the top of the wall.

When this east coast boy traveled to Hawaii it was weird seeing a Redskins home game on the TV at 8:30 in the morning. Just weird.
   464. esseff Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:40 PM (#4258287)
Hate losing Lynn, but you gotta take the shot . . .
   465. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:40 PM (#4258288)
Realistically the schedule should have gone yanks/bal first game, cards/nats second game, a's/tigers third game and reds/giants last game. Yes the ratings will take a hit of course without the great yankees in the prime time game, but realistically speaking, it's not like baseball gets great ratings for the first game of a playoff anyway.

You have tomorrow with the Yanks/Bal in prime time and Cards/Nats at the other time with no problems. So it's just one day thing anyway.
   466. salvomania Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:40 PM (#4258289)
Schumaker over Carpenter as PH???? Really?

Good hitter with power/patience vs. bad hiiter with neither
   467. boteman Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:42 PM (#4258290)
Cardinals have sent 8 batters to the base paths without benefit of a hit. Let's see if they can't make it an even 10?
   468. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:44 PM (#4258292)
I forgot about Bingo.... Good thing Gameday gives you bingo cards at any point during the proceedings... I need the nationals to make an error to get Bingo.

nice play by Descalso.

   478. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:53 PM (#4258303)
Funny that I mentioned the pitchers not covering, and it's arguable that the Nats pitcher was late getting over there(mind you a bad throw also happened, but the pitcher was late from my first impression)
   479. cardsfanboy Posted: October 07, 2012 at 05:54 PM (#4258304)

I really like the commercial with Kerry Wood pulling stuff out of the ivy.

Unfortunately they filmed it with the outfield warning track half in the shadow of a tarp to block excess sunlight and it looks really fake IMO despite being filmed in Wrigley
