Dodgers Acquire Roberto Hernandez

The second white flag trade Hernandez has been involved in! (Wait, what?)

The Phillies announce that they have traded Roberto Hernandez to the Dodgers for two players to be named later or cash considerations…

The Phillies signed Hernandez to a one-year, $4.5MM deal last winter, and he posted a 3.87 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 121 innings for them, with a strong 52.0% ground ball rate. Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, has played parts of nine seasons, also spending time with the Indians and Rays.

Hernandez’s role with the Dodgers is unclear. They have a strong rotation of Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dan Haren and Josh Beckett.

Well, if one player was named later, why not two more?

Roberto Hernandez has played for Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Philly, and now LA. The old Roberto Hernandez also played for those four teams (as well as six other teams).

Unless I'm missing somebody, Hernandez is second among active pitchers in games under .500, behind his new teammate Jamey Wright.

As their 6th starter?

He may replace Beckett, who has struggled in his return from the DL, in the rotation.

I'm still tickled by the name thing. When he chose "Fausto," did he know about the Faust legend?

Can't we just go back to calling him Fausto Carmona so I stop thinking "wait, isn't he like 50?"

When you pay for fake papers, do you choose the name? I assumed he just acquired the papers of an actual person who would have already had a name.

as opposed to acquiring the papers of the Unknown Soldier or something?
   12. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 07, 2014 at 03:22 PM (#4766529)
"Fausto Carmona" is Spanish for "Max Powers."

Roberto took his fastball down to the crossroads in 2007 and came away Fausto.

Faustoberto has 6.1 lifetime WAR--6.2 of that came in 2007...

I had not considered that aspect of it.

Jamey Wright is still pitching?

He (or his family) bought the identity of another younger boy. The real Fausto's mother went public when she couldn't squeeze more money out of Hernandez's family.

On pace for his 4th straight season of 60 innings and sub-4 ERA!

In Latin America, the name of your first pet and the street you grew up on is your fake baseball name, not your porn name.

Although, really, there wasn't another Roberto Hernandez whose identity they could have bought? It's like if Joe Smith had to play under the name Giancarlo Stanton.

some reports have Beckett to DL, some say done for season

08.07: Roberto Hernandez told reporters that he is starting for the Dodgers on Friday in Milwaukee. (That's the rotation spot that belongs to Josh Beckett, who has been a mess over the past couple of weeks. Hernandez was acquired from the Phillies on Thursday afternoon for two players to be named later. He had a 3.87 ERA in 121 innings with Philadelphia, but the right-hander's lack of control and poor strikeout rate make him a poor fantasy bet no matter where he's pitching.)

Thanks, Roberto. You were better than I thought you would be. Which vaunted prospect will the Phillies bring up to replace him?

This was one of those deals that is not exciting, but had to be done; the next in line for LA was Carlos Frias. They really needed a healthy starter.

MLBDepthCharts says it's Sean O'Sullivan. One would think that career 5.90 ERA can only go down.

Now there is a player in need of a new identity.

Right you are! The Top Ten (Bottom Ten?), just using guys who have pitched in the Majors in 2014:

1. Jamey Wright -32 (96-128)
2. Roberto Hernandez/Fausto Carmona -25 (65-90)
3. Charlie Morton -24 (35-59)
4. Paul Maholm -23 (77-100)
4. Kyle Farnsworth -23 (43-66)
6. LaTroy Hawkins -22 (70-92)
6. Zach Duke -22 (54-76)
8. Jeremy Guthrie -21 (77-98)
8. Felipe Paulino, -21 (13-34)
10. Justin Germano, -20 (10-30)

It appears I was too optimistic: O'Sullivan started tonight's game, and has given up 5 runs in 5 innings to the Astros so far (on 3 homers!).

@Davo, he threw a scoreless 6th before being lifted. Got the in-game ERA down from 81.00 after 4 batters to 7.50 when he was lifted. Movement in the right direction.
   29. AndrewJ Posted: August 07, 2014 at 10:09 PM (#4766792)
And O'Sullivan gets a no decision thanks to Mr. Howard.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: August 07, 2014 at 11:19 PM (#4766831)
4. Kyle Farnsworth -23 (43-66)

That's some quality work there.

10. Justin Germano, -20 (10-30)

That's... impressive. Looking him up, it appears that Germano went 2-10, 6.75 in 12 starts with the 2012 Cubs. I have no memory of this whatsoever.
