Skip also had one of the more important recent postseason hits for the Cardinals, in the clinching NLDS Game 5 in 2011 when he doubled off Halladay to drive in the lone run in a memorable 1-0 duel with Chris Carpenter.

Apparently Halladay is one the RHP Schumaker can hit, going 6-for-15 off him, with a walk and no K's.

Nah, I think Ellis still plays a mostly starting job. Skip is bench material.

This was done as a favor to Skip more than anything. He was a great team soldier, reinventing himself for the the team and to get more playing time, but ultimately he wasn't going to fit in with the current lineup. The outfield is set with Hallady/Jay/Beltran and it's time to let the youngsters rack up plate appearances as fourth and fifth outfielders(with Tavares knocking on the door). Second base is going to be a position of attrition, basically with Descalso, Kozma, Ryan Jackson and even Wong all vying for a job. Schumaker would have been the 25th man on the roster, and it wouldn't have been based upon merit but based upon loyalty. It's best for the team to move him.

Nobody agrees with me on this, but I think he's at best an average corner OF as a defender, and putrid as a CF. He is surprisingly slow for a guy who looks like an anti-Molina.

The Cardinals would have to have been pretty circumspect about it, but based on Schumaker's 2011 and 2012 salaries, I assume he was non-tendered a year ago and then immediately re-signed.
