Dodgers appear interested in Tigers’ Inge

Yea…but what about whole Andy Garciaparra act?

The Los Angeles Dodgers have contacted the Tigers about Inge, and while talks do not seem to have progressed far, a baseball official familiar with the situation said the Dodgers remain interested in making a deal.

Inge would play third base for the Dodgers, who did not have a full-time third baseman last season and have been trying to decide between veteran Nomar Garciaparra and rookie Andy LaRoche this spring.

New Dodger manager Joe Torre is familiar with Inge from his time in the American League, and Torre and new Dodgers third base coach Larry Bowa are said to be Inge backers.

This is just because Torre thinks Laroche is best used in 90 innings out of the bullpen.

Because Ned Colletti sincerely detests all young players. Unless Matt Kemp starts off with a 12-for-26, 4 bombs kind of tear, he won't play much, either.

Seriously, this is a team that rewarded one of their top prospects, a player that hit 284/342/559 in his callup in 2006, by wasting his time in the minors while letting Nomar put up a .648 OPS at 1st before grudingingly letting Loney have the job. This is a team that rewarded their 22 year-old pitcher with a 3.80 ERA in the majors by giving his job to Brett Tomko.

Ned Colitis better consider his holy trinity to be Logan White, Paul DePodesta, and Dan Evans, because almost everything good about the Dodgers the last 2 years is due to those 3 people, not the current GM.

I liken them more to the Angels, only in the sense that they let prospects over-ripen and then they get all mushy and inedible. (except when they can be used for apple crumble I guess).

Now, now. There is a non-stupid spin to this:

1. They think/fear Nomar is toast. They seem to have already floated the "Nomar as star pinch-hitter" story.

2. They want Inge as platoon 3B (which seems their plan with Nomar anyway) and backup C/SS/CF ... and it would be really cool to see one guy playing C/SS/CF in a season and not be a gimmick. (I know, Pierre is the backup CF ... and starting LF ... ha ha ha)

I would guess Kemp, Pierre, and Ethier are all at least as capable of playing CF as Inge is. Knowing the Dodgers, they probably don't trust Hu or Abreu to backup Furcal, though.

As for a platoon, don't Laroche, Nomar, and Inge all bat righty?

Anyway, I'm all for this since it makes Levski's proposal more likely.

Hard to imagine the Tigers trading their utility guy to be someone else's utility man. The return in a trade where a team is looking to have Inge as a super-sub probably won't match Inge's value to the Tigers. He'd need to be headed out to be a starter somewhere, imo.
