Dodgers are about to lose Jamey Carroll

Oh Carroll, don’t let them steal our heart away!

The Minnesota Twins reportedly are close to signing an everyday shortstop.

Jamey Carroll, who has spent the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, is closing in on a deal with the Twins, according to Jerry Crasnick of Baseball America and ESPN.com. Fox’s Ken Rosenthal is reporting it would be a two-year deal.

The Twins had a revolving door at shortstop last year en route to a 99-loss season. Alexi Casilla opened the season at short, while Tsuyoshi Nishioka and Trevor Plouffe also had opportunities to grab the job but never did.

Signing a (soon to be) 38-year old Jamey Carroll to be your everyday shortstop seems like an excellent idea.

Carroll was a nice player to have, but I'm not too sad about the loss.

This makes such perfect sense. There is not a player in baseball who is more a Twins' style ballplayer than Jamey Carroll.

That's not true. Jamey Carroll clogs the bases too much.

Just wait until they sign 76-year-old Omar Vizquel as the backup.

If he was 2 years younger, I'd like the move a lot. Of course, even at that age, he's probably more resilient than anyone else on the Twins right now, and one of their better hitters.

Jamey Carroll

age  PA   OPS+
28   79  119
29  260   67
30  256   92
31  358   68
32  534   94
33  268   57
34  402   89
35  358   89
36  414  100
37  510   98

Almost all of those numbers are higher than I would have expected.

The man gets on base.

From 2006-2009 Carrol had 10 HR in 450 games and an 85 OPS+. In 2010-2011 he had 0 HR in 279 games but a 99 OPS+. Neat trick.

Well sure, 2 years ago he was entering his prime. At 38 he might slip a bit but he's coming off his two best seasons.

_______     WAR  oWAR  dWAR
Carroll    15.7  10.2   5.2
Burrell    18.7  20.2

Terry Ryan would have done well to acquire Carroll in his first go-around, instead of Juan Castro.

OPS+ underrates him as well given how OBP heavy his OPS is.

His RC+ for the last 4 years are 104, 104, 89, 93.

Hes an underrated player and even given his age I think value wise anyways his signing is good. 2 years/7 million is great value.

He's actually been a nifty player. I'm not sure the Twins are at the right stage to sign him, though.
