Dodgers’ Mark Ellis came within hours of possibly losing his leg

I expect that you find the idea of a second baseman with an artificial leg pretty amusing.

That leg surgery on Mark Ellis apparently was even more serious than first suspected.

Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly said Sunday if the surgery had not been performed that Ellis was mere hours away from losing his lower left leg.

Mattingly said Dr. Neal ElAttrache told him the muscle might have died if surgeons had performed the fasciotomy six or seven hours later…

Mattingly said the injury is rare for athletes and was told by doctors it is more common for victims of car accidents. Ellis was placed on the disabled list Saturday and is expected to be out for approximately six weeks.

Somehow when I read this headline I thought he was still on the As.

IIRC, this is sort of how one of the characters (trying to avoid spoilers) died in Lost. There was significant debate about whether to try to save his/her life by amputating the leg.

I had compartment syndrome in my hand and had to have an emergency fasciotomy. I was probably closer than 6 or 7 hours away from losing my hand, given that it literally looked like a rubber glove that's inflated looked, except that it was purple instead of white. Scary stuff.

Yikes. Ellis is my favorite player. Hope he recovers fully.

The Phillies lost their Legg in 1994.

He'd have more range than Jeter with one leg.

Ouch.

Ugh, I made the mistake of going to the wiki page for 'fasciotomy' after seeing a blurb about this on Rotoworld this morning. I'm still regretting that decision.

Yeah. I was eating oatmeal. Protip: don't eat oatmeal and google "fasciotomy."

What's scarier - a fasciotomy or Elian Herrera, everyday 2nd baseman?

Could Kennedy still play second? If not, maybe they should have claimed Hudson.

I have chronic compartment syndrome in my throwing arm (aka Kyle Lohse disease). Basically ruined my senior year of HS ball and keeps me from playing too much softball or tennis to this day. It is exquisitely painful.
