Dodgers reliever Proctor: ‘I’m ... pathetic’

If only Scott Proctor’s Arm could speak…

There is nothing wrong with Scott Proctor.

Not physically, anyway.

“I’m not talking about that,” the Dodgers reliever said after failing to retire any of the five batters he faced in what became a decisive, six-run 11 thinning for the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. “There is nothing (wrong), and I’m tired of people making excuses and saying I’m hurt. My job is to get outs, and I’m (expletive) pathetic. It’s embarrassing to know this team battled like that all day and I pitched like that. It’s (expletive) stupid.

“I’m embarrassed for myself in front of my teammates.”

A good 11 thinning should teach the Indians.

The Dodgers should take him to the proctorologist and see if anything's wrong.

The real problem is Torre, who treats Proctor as though he were reliable and uses him in higher-leverage situations than he should.

Has Proctor ever been 'not pathetic'?

He was very good in 2006 (ERA+ of 128 in 102 relief innings, k/bb ratio of 2.70/1) and decent in 2007 (ERA+ of 124 in 86 innings, but with a drop of k/bb ratio to 1.45/1). Not a star, but certainly a very useful middle reliever.

The problem is 2006 was a bit of a surprise, and likely above what he will do for the rest of his career. I would expect some bounce back though.

I swear Torre had him warming up in the pen twice a game back in 06....rode hard, put away wet.

I ran into Scott Proctor and his young family in a local NJ restaurant last year, and he was very pleasant and personable to my daughter and me. We chatted for a while, he told us that the Yankees had won that day, it was a shutout, and he pitched in the game. Never mentioned that he had gotten thrown out (and later suspended) for his part in a beanball incident with the Mariners.

He seemed to be a genuine, down-to-earth, likeable and respectful guy, and I became a fan of his that evening. Just wish he could pitch a little better.

I was always fond of Proctor just because he was half of the trade to get Robin Ventura. Not that Ventura was any great shakes with the Dodgers - just that I always liked him, and was glad that he got to play for the team I root for.

He'll always be remembered for the game-winning bomb in San Diego on Aug. 1, 2004.
That series, coming right after the LoDuca trade, was as emotional as I can remember as a Dodgers fan.
