Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager to undergo Tommy John surgery, will miss rest of season

Seager, a 24-year-old, two-time All Star, was placed on the disabled list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. Tommy John surgery involves replacing the injured ligament.

Seager suffered from elbow discomfort throughout the second half of 2017, however the team’s medical staff advised against Seager undergoing surgery this past winter.

This would qualify as a big, big, big, big deal.

Bummer. Now, what's the asking price for the final few months of Machado's pre-FA career?

Other options once their teams give up: Hechevarria (TB), Escobar (MN), Galvis (SD), Rojas (Mia). None of those are particularly attractive options. I'm assuming the Dodgers don't really have somebody sitting at AAA.

Other options are to get a CF (or deal with Pederson) and put Taylor at SS.

By the way, in what I assume is a mostly platoon role, Utley is tearing it up.

Looks like the Dodgers may need to make a trade here, a good one, not a great one. The kind virtually every GM could make. And would make, if they lost a key player and knew that a losing team off to a terrible start might soon make an All-Star about-to-be free agent at the same position available. I see nothing remarkable about such a trade.

Shut down the thread, that’s a win for Clapper.

Marcus Semien will probably be available once Barreto is ready.

I was thinking, has there ever been a first baseman or DH whose had Tommy John surgery?
Those are the two positions where you don't need a strong throwing arm.

Greg Colburnn. Erubial Durazo.

The dodgers could be in trouble. If the score tonight holds up, they'll be 8 back. Not impossible, but hard with so many health issues.

The dodgers also capped themselves under the tax. They may have to pay it if they want Machado, on top of whatever prospects it costs (I'm guessing he won't be traded cause no way he'll get that much in return).

To mimic Walt. Bummer.

I don't like seeing fun players go down with injury, no matter the team.

however the team’s medical staff advised against Seager undergoing surgery this past winter.

Oops...

A quick scan suggests that position player return ~12 months after going under the knife, and often as little as 8. The risk of losing Seager for a month or so at the start of next season vs. the certainty of him missing 2018 is hard to judge. How well position players recover, I have no idea.

One would like to think that the doctors' opinions are based purely on medical reasons rather than that kind of calculus, obviously.

I'd love to see the Rockies make Trevor Story available, and just give his job to Brendan Rodgers.

I considered but rejected Semien (for now) since he's having a nice year, still cheap and far from FA and the A's are 500. If they promote Barreto, I was just assuming they'd move Semien ... but everybody on the A's is having a nice season so far. So they probably would be willing to move him in a solid deal.

I hadn't thought about Rodgers. Story's also hitting nicely, even less service time than Semien and the Rox are also at 500. The Rox currently have so many holes in the lineup, Story would likely move somewhere. But sure, in the right deal.

NL Wild Card is promising to be a mess this year and especially if the Dodgers are going to struggle a bit, I can see both WCs being pretty mediocre 87-88 win teams. (or higher win totals thanks to Cincy et al but just as mediocre). The Rox actually have the 4th-worst run differential and are 3 games over their pythag but I can see them still being in the race at least to the deadline. The AL ... well, it depends on whether Toronto keeps playing solidly -- currently 4 teams with really good run differentials, 5 teams with disastrous ones and 6 teams around zero.

By the way, early but the NL leads interleague 20-12. I assume that means Cincy et al haven't played the AL yet.

The Braves have warmed up Joey Bats for an MLB return, if the dodgers are interested. The dodgers GM needs to do the Braves a solid, after the Braves were kind enough to take Hector Oliva off of their hands (who also should be available somewhere, if the dodgers are so inclined).

I had no idea Matt Kemp is only 33 years old. He's been an "old man" for at least half a decade now. When I saw that he was having a good start I thought good for him. One last good season before he retires.

I would assume that any trade for Machado would include Matt Kemp + a bunch of prospects. O's have needs everywhere.

That would be a very un-Rockies-like move. Though I guess they did trade Seth Smith and Corey Dickerson for pitching. OTOH, maybe they'll option Story to AAA and replace him with some AAA fodder like Daniel Castro. (Castro just replaced McMahon on the roster.)
