Dodgers Sign Hyun-Jin Ryu

Transporting this many pitchers might violate the Byron Mann Act!

The Dodgers have signed Korean left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Terms of the deal… are not yet known.

The Dodgers expect Ryu to be part of their starting rotation next season, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Dylan Hernandez...

Ryu, represented by Scott Boras, was posted by the Hanwha Eagles last month and the Dodgers won his negotiating rights with a bid worth a bit more than $25.7MM. The 25-year-old has been one of the Korea Baseball Organization’s most dominant pitchers over the last several years, helping Korea win Olympic gold in 2008 and finish second in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Ryu went 9-9 with a 2.66 ERA last season for last place Hanwha with 210 strikeouts in 182 2/3 innings. He has a 2.80 ERA over his seven-year career in Korea.

6/60 million, total, including postal fee.

So, they've got eight starting pitchers under contract? Are they going to trade someone? Stash a few dudes in AAA (if they can)? Eight man rotation? Rangers-style 2x4 rotation?

How does Heyman scoop the competition?

The Dodgers seems to be taking a fantasy baseball viewpoint. Take as many starting talent as you can, and then bench players who could play for you and only use them when injuries happen.

Man, stamp prices have really gone up. :-)

Any chance the new owners think they bought both LA teams?
   7. JRVJ Posted: December 09, 2012 at 09:57 PM (#4320555)
It's somewhat surprising that Bud-Zilla is allowing the Dodgers new owners to go so hog wild.

JRVJ: Selig can't stop it. The bankruptcy court won't allow it.

#2, I expect at least Capuano or Harang to be traded, quite possibly both - especially if they can get a near major league ready arm back. Lilly should be ready by spring training, so he could be traded early in the season if Billingsley looks healthy.

Colletti will probably try to get marginal major league talent - I'm hoping they get some prospects to help rebuild the system.

I'd like a mix of prospects and bench strength.

The Dodgers will need some prospects to go with Zach Lee for when they acquire King Felix and/or David Price.

Hopefully Colletti will realize this.

Random Prediction: Beckett will either not be in the starting rotation or not be a Dodger by All-Star Break.

8, Bud works in many mysterious ways. Not all of them are all that lawful, and in the clubby world of MLB ownership, you would think the Dodgers owners should beware of Bud's powers.

The new market efficiency is not signing free agents, letting the Dodgers overpay for them, and wait to get handed their perfectly cromulent castoffs.

The Dodgers can sign bench strength.

The Giants should sign Evil Ryu.

I remember Hadouken, and Shoryuken, but I had to look up the third Ryu special move, that one where he spins in the air and kicks like a helicopter and yells something like "hut-pry-ket-pyru-ket!" Apparently it's called the Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku.

You mean Ken?

I always hated Ken for some reason. But then I always played Vega/Chun-Li. I always wanted to play Zangief, but he was too damned slow.

I see this post has gone in an interesting direction.... at least in the first couple of Street Fighters Chun-Li is generally the most fool proof ... errr wait.

Anyway I'd be interested in seeing how Ryu fare in the US, I'd figure he'd probably do well enough with the Dodgers and then entice a team playing in a bandbox to sign him to a crazy contract before being best remembered for fly kicking someone in a brawl and/or take out base running move... hmm wait (i really did saw an old KBO clip where some dude basically went all Bruce Lee in a take out move.)

Well, sure ... by the AS break they'll have added Felix, Price, Verlander, Cain and Hologram Fernando and Kershaw will be pitching long relief ... in Albuquerque!*

*Is the Dodgers AAA team still there? They probably haven't been there for 25 years or something you're about to tell me.
   22. Tripon Posted: December 10, 2012 at 01:12 AM (#4320671)
The Dodgers moved back to Albuquerque about 3-4 years ago after a lengthy stay in Las Vegas. They just signed another 2 year extension to stay for the next two years.

Glad to know I'm so old I'm au courant again!

I played Dhalsim so I could stay on the far side of the screen and slap guys at a distance.

Did anyone ever play Time Killers?

Evil Ryu and Super Akuma were added to later releases - they're not Ken. I never could beat them in SF Alpha 2.

The Dodgers hope Ryu has a career as good as Ken.

Rangers-style 2x4 rotation?
I guess I haven't been paying attention, I think I missed this one. What is it?
   28. zack Posted: December 10, 2012 at 11:20 AM (#4320882)
I think Mr. White was referring to the Rockies. Mid-year they started using two starters per game for 3 or 4-inning stints because their rotation was so terrible.
