Dodgers vs. Brewers: Benches clear after Manny Machado steps on Jesus Aguilar’s foot at first base

The bottom of the 10th inning of Game 4 of the National League Championship Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers featured a benches-clearing incident involving Manny Machado and Jesus Aguilar. The two exchanged words following a play at first base where Machado tangled up with Aguilar’s foot.

Machado grounded out for the second out of the inning and while running through the first base bag, he made contact with the back of Aguilar’s foot. The benches and bullpens cleared, but nothing more came of it and the game resumed after a brief delay.

It appeared that Machado dragged his foot so that it would hit Aguilar’s at first base.

Is it just me, or is Machado going out of his way to build an image as a heel this NLCS?

Nicely played!

Machado wants to be the new A-Rod.

Great player, but cheap, dirty, bush-league.

Classless.

Arod never made a play as crappy as that play at first. The slap was an awful attempt to dislodge the ball, but he was trying to help his team.

Machado was either trying to injure Aguilar or indifferent to that outcome. There was no other reason for it.

He's a complete #######.

Completely dirty play, and after his antics the day before (and really his entire career to this point), he gets zero benefit of the doubt.

As a fan of the Dodgers, I am not enjoying the Manny Machado Era.

Rich Hill was closer to A-Rod in this game when he took a swipe (with his pitching hand) at the throw to first on his groundout.

I don't think he was in real danger of getting the ball, but that was weird.

Machado's play was terrible.

Maybe he was just following the orders of his Cobra Kai sensei.

I'll never forget Joe Buck's call: "The benches clear and nothing will happen. Tonight on Fox, stay tuned for an all new House, wait, I mean, Google- what's the capacity of the Dodger Stadium benches?"

It was a cheapshot move - but it should be noted that they kind of hugged it out in the 12th when Machado reached... of course, given that he ultimately came around to score the winning run, perhaps Aguilar should returned the favor instead.

The hugs increased my respect for Aguilar and decreased my respect for Machado.

Cross-posting:

If you want to see a very detailed breakdown, here it is, complete with multiple angles and comparisons to an earlier play at first with the same two players.

I think Manny didn't like the way Aguilar had covered so much of the width of the bag the first time, so he did his thing the next time to teach him to keep out of the way. I might start watching what other first basemen do to see if it is unusual for a first baseman to play it that way.
