Dominican police seek ex Angels Vladimir Guerrero on brawl

The National Police on Tuesday announced an all points bulleting for the arrest of Major League Baseball star Vladimir Guerrero, for the alleged aggression against to a Police major and for unleashing a brawl in a discotheque.

Police spokesman Maximo Baez said one of Guerrero’s brothers, two cousins and a worker are being held for their alleged part in the melee.

“Police chief major general (Jose) Polanco instructed Baní regional (south) director general (Juan Ramon) de la Cruz Martinez to continue the pursuit,” Baez said.

Thanks to Chet.

And still making contact! Actually, this story is kind of boring. Without machetes, or people set on fire, it's barely newsworthy.

That means he was not trying to hit cutoff men.

I would have felt more confident with Danys Baez in the bullpen if his name was "Maximo Baez".

As someone who works in the criminal justice field, I am deeply saddened by the fact that I cannot charge someone with the crime of "unleashing a brawl in a discotheque."

I'm looking at you, legislative branch!

I think you can - the charges just won't stick...

Some many years ago, as responding officers broke up a barfight that a buddy of mine was earnestly trying to get involved in a Buster Bluth sort of way, he asked the officer threatening him with arrest exactly what the charge would be, and the cop responded "being a ######### and accessory to #############\"

Just a police major? Get back to us when he assaults a judge. And on a beach, no less! Much more treacherous footing than a discotheque.

"The 28-year-old Ponson is accused of committing violence alone or in the company of others in public, kicking a person in the head and battering a person by hitting him in the face with his fist."

Man, these other countries have all the fun. "Unleashing a brawl in a discotheque"? "Committing violence alone or in the company of others in public"?

EDIT: Also, I like that Ponson "kicked" one guy, but he didn't "punch" the other. Rather, he "battered" him by "hitting him in the face with his fist."

When it's bad things, I'd prefer that we all use "ex-Oriole" instead of "ex-Angel" as the prefix. Or "Ex-po."

Well, if your future prospects had tanked once the projection systems named after you had been left by the side of the road in favor of one named after a non-descript white utility infielder, you'd be ready to "unleash" yourself, too.

Well, for someone who wants to "forget it," jmac, you've at least clarified the full breadth of DM's joke. For my money, all projection systems should be named after folks with the surname "Guerrero." That doesn't give us as many choices at the major league level, but just look at the number of minor leaguers who could provide some really bizarre new names. Wascar, anyone??

#31 - the latter. I guess I just meant that I realized he's likely not going to play in the majors again. Although I suppose he could always pull a Sammy Sosa.

I kind of liked Wilton the projection system. It may not have worked well, but Gary's goal was to try to predict breakout seasons, and as hard as that is, it's more interesting to me than projection systems that are very conservative.

Brawl Related Injury Equation Notation - used by the Yankees to assess the risk of career ending injuries of minor league uber prospects in the event that they unleash a brawl in a discoteque.
   40. Ron J Posted: April 11, 2012 at 09:48 AM (#4103760)
#35 You're thinking of Vlad. Wilton was the system Clay Davenport came up with to replace Vlad after Gary left Prospectus.

I'm pretty sure that Wilton was not neural net related. Not that Clay couldn't have come up with something like that given time, but my impression was that he just didn't have a lot of time and came up with a fairly conservative (and not coincidentally, one with a smaller standard error than Vlad) system.

   42. Ray (RDP) Posted: April 11, 2012 at 11:02 AM (#4103801)
Right, Ron, I was thinking of Vlad. The concept was a lot more interesting to me than the more conservative-type projection systems. Dan's system is great, but I'm generally not very surprised by his projections of major league players; his system is most useful to me for projecting minor leaguers, since I'm not able to do park/league/age projections, or calculate MLEs, in my head.

As to Vlad, it's more difficult to project breakouts, and thus any system that tries is going to look poor in relation to a more conservative system, but, as I said, they're more interesting to me. BP has taken a lot of heat for its Matt Wieters projection some years ago (I think that was a PECOTA projection), and had it been looking for breakout seasons from players it would have been fine - but in that case I think they just misfired. I think Colin has mentioned there were some systemic errors that led to such a high projection.
   43. Ron J Posted: April 11, 2012 at 12:16 PM (#4103914)
#42 Colin spotted an error in the Eastern League offensive context (before he was at BP) IIRC.

And I agree that the approach Vlad took made it an interesting contrast since pretty much every other projection system is regress to career norms, minor adjustments for age.
