If you really want to slice and dice the data, the Baseball Databank has salary info back to... I want to say 1987, although I can't confirm that right now. For transactions (trades, date signed, etc.) Retrosheet has a downloadable transactions log.
Just for a refresher on how outrageous the Zito contract was I took a look at Cot's page for the Giants ... Zito's still guaranteed 5 more years -- Yowza! -- and the $18M option for 2014 made me chuckle.
By that time, my newborn son will be old enough to know how much of a horrible contract this is!
Also notable is the $1M bonus for each of the 3 or more Cy Youngs that Zito's going to win.
