Dontrelle Willis filing grievance

The O’s have already been banned from Korea, maybe they’ll be banned from signing washed-up pitchers?

Pitcher Dontrelle Willis is filing a grievance against the Baltimore Orioles, alleging that the club placed him on the restricted list and is preventing him from signing with another organization even though he left the Orioles’ Triple-A affiliate with the consent of a team official.

Willis received permission from Tripp Norton, Baltimore’s director of baseball administration, before leaving the Norfolk Tides last Wednesday, said agent Matt Sosnick.

Dan Duquette, Baltimore’s executive vice president of baseball operations, didn’t immediately respond to a phone call or email. But Duquette told CBSSports.com on Monday that Willis left Norfolk without the organization’s permission. Duquette added that the Orioles would welcome Willis’ return and think he can be a successful reliever in the big leagues.

I would be inclined to consider Willis's grievance dubious if it was with just about any other team in the majors. This is exactly the kind of #### the Orioles would do.

I would be inclined to blame the team if it was with just about any other player in the majors. This is exactly the kind of #### that Willis would do.

Has D-Train ever walked out on a team before? My perception of him is that he is a good guy.

I would be inclined to agree with one of the first two posters if this was just about any other site on the Internet. This is exactly the kind of #### that BTF posters would write.

My impression is that Willis is a good guy who is just no longer a good pitcher. The only thing to contradict that is the DUI charge from a few years ago, when he was 24, but that doesn't outweigh the positive community service work he did. I'd also like to think that, now 5 years older and married with two kids, he's probably more mature.

I would be inclined to believe this grievance will be handled under MLB's Grievance Procedure. This is exactly the kind of #### that the Grievance Procedure would handle.

If this goes to arb, the O's credibility will be at issue.

"I have not been contacted by any Asian team about Dontrelle," Sosnick said. "But I know that Dan has closer ties to Korea than I do, so maybe he knows something that I don't know."

Did no one click through? I am surprised you guys missed this epic burn.

Nice burn that is for sure. From the way it reads the Orioles should be avoided by all free agents at all levels unless the player is super-desperate. This will not reflect well on them and should just help keep them fighting for a 500 season (last in the AL East should be a lock - no way they stay this high for too long).

Speaking as a Jays fan, shhhhhhh. The last thing we need is a good old jynxing. One would think throwing around words like "a lock" about an AL East team's performance would be off limits on BTF.

I read TFA, and I'm still wondering with whom the grievance will be filed - Willis signed a minor league contract. Would MLB or the MLBPA have jurisdiction/care?
