Down six vs. Doc, Braves rally twice, walk off in 11

What initially seemed destined to be a miserable evening instead proved to be one of the more memorable ones experienced during a storied career that has gradually gotten better as Chipper Jones nears retirement.

Jones had produced seven previous game-ending home runs. But none of them had been hit on a night when the Braves had overcome a six-run deficit against Roy Hallday and then another four-run deficit in the eighth.

Given all of the dramatic twists and turns the previous four hours had generated at Turner Field on Wednesday night, it was only fitting that Jones add to the splendor of the evening by victimizing Brian Sanches with a two-run home run that allowed the Braves to celebrate a 15-13, 11-inning win over the Phillies in walk-off fashion.

And Chipper wasn’t even the oldest player to hit a walk-off home run yesterday.

I spent the evening "watching" this on MLB's Gameday, yearning for the days of 140 games on TBS. I would not have bet a lot of money on the Braves winning a game started by Roy Halladay after they fell behind 6-0.

It's gotten lost in the early season storylines, but after that wretched 0-4 beginning, which prompted so many "Wake me up when September ends!" headlines, the Braves have played really good baseball.

What was cool/really hurt, depending on your side of the fence, is that Jones hit a foul HR in the same AB.

That game was a ton of fun, what a roller coaster ride. We watched the highlights after we got back from the game and that's when we realized it was so loud after McCann's grand slam that we couldn't hear the home run music (which is a good thing because it's awful).

Halladay always seems to have one or two of these complete meltdowns a year. Just when you think this might be the year he has an all-time great season, he does this.

The MLB Tonight guys noted that Halladay is undefeated in his career when staked to 6+ runs. I think he had something crazy like 110+ wins. He was in line to have that record blemished until all the crazy late-inning stuff.

Glenn Close stood up after Chipper's first drive went foul. That should have tipped me off.

It's a good thing that Manuel held back Papelbon in the 8th inning implosion last night. Or in the 9th, 10th, 11th. You know you need him for the save and you might need him for the save in the next (today's) game. Oops, (not so) Heavy Joe B decides to throw a 3 hit shutout today. God, I hate the SAVE stat.

6-0? At 4-0 I thought Halladay had it locked down.

Dreadful crowd though. About 1/4-1/3 were Phillies fans.

strange implosion too.. it was quite the case of Sequencing Attacks! Five singles and a GS, with lots of guys fighting off strikeouts.
