Drago: Darin Ruf becomes new R-Phils home run king

Not only did Eastern League MVP Darin Ruf break Ryan Howard’s Reading home run record with 38, Justin Friend tied the Reading save record with 24!

The homer was Ruf’s 20th of August, equaling the major league record for most homers in a month by Sammy Sosa in 1998.

In 30 games this month Ruf has 35 RBIs, 29 runs scored, a .372 batting average and a .947 slugging percentage.

Ruf was a 20th-round pick out of Creighton in the 2009 draft. The only good players ever to come from Creighton, despite its proximity to the College World Series, are Dennis Rasmussen, Scott Servais, and Alan Benes.

You forgot ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte.

I've never paid attention to it before, but why do minor leagues hand out awards before the season is over?

Ruf! Ruf! I'm Phillie, the rockin' dog.

Did everyone see those stats above! Holy f***ing bananas!

In Sammy Sosa's 20HR month he hit a mere .298 with a piddling .842 SLG and 25 runs scored.

So, he's a big slugging 1B in the Phillies minor league system, but he's getting into his mid 20s and is blocked by Major League 1B whom the Phillies have locked up? Sounds oddly familiar.

No problem, the incumbent 1B can just be traded for Gio Gonzalez again.

this is pretty cool, but also i'm pretty sure it's sold out.

there's rumors that the phillies will be calling ruf up now that it's september and give him a look in LF.

They better. He is 26 and has had a monster AA year. Even if he isn't a real prospect he deserves a MLB callup as a reward for his year (or, rather, a reward for his last month). It's the right thing to do.

So, next Red Sox 1B anyone?

What if McCoy offers you Soriano for Ruf?
