Drink your Orioles pain away: This Baltimore bar is offering free shots every time Chris Davis gets a hit

A bar in Baltimore is trying to lighten the mood around Orioles first baseman Chris Davis’ historically poor season, with the help of alcohol.  Bartenders Pub at 2218 Boston St. is offering customers free Dr Pepper shooters for every hit Davis gets.

It shouldn’t cost them much.

Now that is cold.

The problem seems to be that Davis is doing a shot BEFORE he goes up to the plate.

Miller High Life and amaretto? Not even for free.

It sounds gross but it's actually a pretty good college shot/mid-20s shot. It's not a mind eraser but it works.

I was a bartender back before Cal Ripken won his second MVP, mostly in coastal bars. There was a brief period where the college girls on vacation all ordered Tootsie Roll shooters - equal parts Kahlua and Orange Juice. Sticky, sweet, and barely alcoholic. It was atrocious. And sounds a lot like these Dr. Peppers.

Back when I was catering to college crowds and parties the big shot was red bull and vodka. It seems to have subsided there a bit.

What, you don't squeeze an orange slice into your morning coffee?

A beer with a shot of Amaretto in it really does taste like Dr. Pepper. We used to do it with Rolling Rock.

Do you think they will continue this for the next 4 years? I cannot believe he has 4 more years to go on contract.

No, I have my hot orange juice separate from my hot coffee.

If you choose to suffer with Rolling Rock I suppose you'd do anything at that point.

It was a good beer back when it was still independent and made in Latrobe. I have no taste for the over-hopped crafty stuff. Nothing wrong with a nice cold refreshing blonde beer.

I mean, there's always lemonade.

Speaking of disgusting bar drinks, I made the mistake of saying yes to my buddy the bartender convincing me to try a beer float. Pro tip: do not EVER, under any circumstances, put ice cream in beer.

If you put whiskey in it, you've got a whiskey sour. Great warm weather drink.

The real issue is that beer just doesn't taste good. When it's hot, you want something cold and refreshing, so a light flavored beer works.

But, I can't imagine wanting to savor a heavy beer when whiskey is freely available, or wine.

I'd rather have that than a Dr. Pepper.

Guinness and vanilla ice cream, while disappointing isn't terrible. What beer were you using for your float?

Ice cream with an oatmeal stout is good. I bet it would be good with one of those coriander-seed white beers too.

I'm sorry, but that just sounds disgusting. I like beer and ice cream but not together.

The best beer to use is root beer.

Whatever generic beer his bar had on tap, I'm assuming. This was a few decades ago so no craft beer available. Guinness? We couldn't even spell it back then.

Ron Swoboda has it right: keep beer and ice cream separated, the way God intended.

Do you like ice cream and soda floats?

Agreed.

The GF and I used to go to Bartenders every week when she lived in Fells Point. It's a fun and friendly place, good pizza and tacos, decent prices, and they ring a bell and the bartenders and bar sing the Orioles song whenever the O's hit a homer.

Wow, he is really having a bad year. On the plus side, after this year there's only 4 years and $92 million to go.

In retrospect, it looks like he signed a contract at exactly the right time. 147 OPS+ in 2015, signed in January 2016, followed by OPS+ of 110, 95, 28 (this year).

Sure, if you have a uterus it's great.

Wow, he is really having a bad year.

He can hang out with Calhoun and Sano. Is it me or are there just a lot of name players really, really sucking this year?

Beer floats are awesome. We used have them when I was in college back in the seventies. We also put beer on our Frosted Flakes for breakfast.

O's get shut out again last night - although Davis didn't play so he had a good night, relatively.

One year when Dave Valle was having an atrocious year with the Mariners, a bar near the Kingdome had a promotion where the price of a drink was equal to Valle's batting average (times 10), i.e. $1.72 or whatever.

Adrian Beltre's 48-HR season is already 14 years ago. Wow.
