Driven out: Twins rookie _ and ex-Uber guy _ tagged by Yanks

NEW YORK (AP) — Just too much traffic for Twins rookie Randy Dobnak.

The feel-good story of the Uber driver-turned-big league pitcher came to a screeching halt Saturday when the New York Yankees tagged him from the get-go in an 8-2 rout, putting Minnesota in a serious jam in the AL Division Series.

“Nerves were fine,” Dobnak said. “I don’t know what it was.”

A week removed from his in-season wedding in Maryland, and with new bride Aerial in the stands, Dobnak soaked in the mocking, taunting cheers of “Uber, Uber” from the bleacher crowd at Yankee Stadium when he limbered up in the outfield before Game 2.

Yankees fans, showing (as they have so often this season) the sort of class and dignity that explains why so many people root for anyone else…..

Not even gonna put up a fight, eh, Twins? Fine. Let's just watch the Yankees in the ALCS for the eighty-nine-billionth time. Sigh.

Am I the only one who had not realized that the Twins have now lost 15 straight postseason games?

...and thirteen straight to you-know-who.

Just 12, it was a 3 game sweep to the A's otherwise.

In fact, neither of those two teams have won a postseason series against a team other than the other one since the Twins won in 1991.

This is a really really mild form of taunting. The media promoted his Uber thing constantly as a plucky story so that's all anyone knows about him. I would agree with you if they were, like, saying bad things about Venezuela for a poorly-performing pitcher from there.

His pornstache is the really embarassing thing though.

As widely noted, Dobnak only had 28 MLB innings, although they were pretty good. I don’t know what Baldelli saw with his eye test, but Dobnak hadn’t pitched in 10 days, and I was surprised that the Twins didn’t go with Odorizzi, who pitched well in his only Yankee Stadium outing this season. Dobnak did keep the ball in the park - no HRs - but that wasn’t nearly enough. In any event, if Baldellii’s assessment of Dobnak is at all close, he should do OK next season.

The Twins may want to stop shifting against Aaron Judge - he has a 1.200 OPS without an extra base hit. It looks like Judge has decided to take the easy base hits the Twins are giving him, when they don’t walk him.

The Twins have been losing post season games to Voldemort??!??

Well, actually, that kind of works.

it was 1-0 with the bases loaded when the Yankees' uber-rally against the bullpen began

There were no outs, so it wasn’t looking good, but one can make a case that reliever Tyler Duffy’s 21.60 ALDS ERA was the Twins biggest problem. Plenty of blame to go around.

I mean #### the Yankees and their fans and anyone who uses the word “New” or “York” or “Yankees.”

But this is pretty classic jeering. They aren’t ripping apart his family or an illness or something, it’s pretty amusing. This is what fans should be doing.

I was actually thinking the opposite...it's classist and trying to humiliate someone for a job they took so they could survive. As if half of those fans didn't take an Uber to the ballpark.

It further doesn't help things when you remember just how much a lot of those seats cost and who are likely to be able to afford them, nor does the past history of the team with such matters (including the more-or-less official reason why they were so slow to integrate).
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 06, 2019 at 11:46 PM (#5887244)
Trying to make something out of fans razzing the opposing pitcher is beyond silly - more like a desperate attempt to spread fanboy hate.

Jeering is always unseemly and vulgar. That's why it's fun.

Assuming Dobnak wouldn't getting jeered is crazy and I'm sure he didn't assume that. He pitched like crap. It happens. I mean, if anyone has an excuse for pitching like crap, it's the guy who was an uber driver a year ago. All-stars, hell, future HOFers, sometimes pitch like crap in the postseason. #### happens.
   15. spycake Posted: October 07, 2019 at 09:16 AM (#5887280)
I suspect a lot of minor leaguers drive Uber in the offseason, or have comparable jobs. It's perhaps the least noteworthy thing about the whole Dobnak story.
   16. spycake Posted: October 07, 2019 at 09:17 AM (#5887281)
Are we sure the Yankee fans weren't just singing "Yankees über alles"? :)

He got married a week ago...I cannot imagine my wife allowing me to have a mustache like that in our wedding photos. Or ever.

QFT.

Yeah, it seemed like pretty harmless razzing, and I doubt Dobnak was offended by it. It's not like the fans were doing something really stupid like whining about how unfairly Hank and Hal have been treated.

Pineda should have been out there and he was sent home for being dumb and/or cheating. That was his spot. To make matters worse Gibson had a bunch of medical stuff late in the summer and was moved out of the rotation into the pen. And that's on a rotation that was not awesome to begin with. No one can count on scoring enough in the playoffs to give up six or more a game. You might win, but chances are the team you're facing is good, likely balanced, and thus probably not putting a bad pitcher out there. This was not going to be good from the get-go.

Part of that falls on the MN front office. Pineda is the third starting player to get an 80 day suspension in the past five years. Santana happened before they go here, but if that sort of thing is already happening in your organization and you want to avoid getting hit by it you have to go out of your way to drive it out. I doubt the Twins are actually going to come right out and say "Look what Pineda did to us! We had to start What's His Name!" But there will be references to it for years: "You want to be ready when the playoffs start. Be there for your teammates. Prepare for the whole season."

Too bad John Coppolella is banned from baseball; he could bring his special brand of decorum to the Twins.

About a month before his banishment, he was quoted about the Braves' improved prospects for the upcoming 2018 season.

A big point for me is that you’re not seeing starts go to Joel De La Cruz. You’re not seeing innings go to Jake Brigham or Ryan Kelly.

Has anyone ever used the word "fanboy" while not themselves actively being one at that very moment?

Exactly. I'm completely indifferent to the Yankees, I just think it's shitty to insult someone for their job. But I'm "spreading fanboy hate!!11!"
