‘Duk: Tim Lincecum slims down with swim routine, loses appetite for McDonald’s

Checks Ptolemaic Terrascope for freak folk eating habits. No luck.

Tim Lincecum’s bank account may be getting a lot fatter, but the Freak’s physique is headed the opposite way. After using 2011 to bulk up in an attempt to gain endurance, Lincecum appeared at the Giants fanfest this past weekend and said he had lost 22 pounds over the winter.

...He also cut down on his famous trips to In-N-Out while eliminating other outlets entirely.

Bad Ronald!

“You take your first bite of a McDonald’s burger and it’s like ‘Why did I buy this?’” Lincecum said to reporters.

“You feel instantly sick. That’s what ended up happening with all these places and why I started eliminating them. I take a bite and I’m like ‘I can’t even finish this.’ So I just started going for stuff that made me feel better. I’m not crushing vegetables by any means, but I’m definitely eating better.”

Lincecum said all of this while wearing a hat for Tacolicious, a San Francisco dining phenomenon that relies on local farmers for their ingredients. So perhaps he really is easing his way past the drive-thru routine of an early 20-something..

I never would have guessed Tim Lincecum being in the best shape of his career would involve losing weight.

Losing weight is the new steroids.

I have to say that on those rare occasions when I drive through McD's or Wendy's I have the same thoughts, both while I am eating and later when I feel like there's a lead blimp in my belly. Add in additional prodding from the movie Supersize Me and there's plenty of reason to eschew chewing on a Big Mac in favor of something lower on the food chain.

I fail to see what's wrong with vegetables, though. I guess he has to keep a shred of masculinity in public by denouncing them. I mean, no self-respecting Major Leaguer would be caught dead at the veggie end of the buffet table!

He was enormous last year. He had to be 165, 170 at least.

“You take your first bite of a McDonald’s burger and it’s like ‘Why did I buy this?’” Lincecum said to reporters.

That really makes me want McDonald's for lunch. The first bite of a Quarter Pounder... mmm. Yeah, it's gonna happen.

Timmeh's following my McDonald's evolution. I went from multiple Big Macs/Quarter Pounders for a meal to kind of grossed out by McDonald's eventually. Growing up blows.

Now, more importantly, is this Tacolicious place any good? The name is just ####### terrible, but I like me some tacos.

Thought I was alone in this. My parents didn't let us eat fast food growing up (no big health reason since there was lots of incredibly unhealthy foods they used to feed us at home) and once I was able to go out on my own I used to love McDonald's, Burger King, etc. Now...just the thought of the stuff makes me feel ill. I will splurge on gourmet burger places though.

I'm getting old, but I didn't read his comment as bashing vegetables. I read it as an admission that he could be eating healthier than he is, but still has made some positive changes. Re-reading it four times, I guess there may be a little edge to the comment, but I still think it's more self-effacing then anything else.

They're good. They'll do special things like grill onions and give you your choice of condiments so you can have mustard instead of mayo or ketchup if you want. I recall the fries being very good as they made them fresh every day.

I wish In-and-Out was somewhere East of Texas, like, say, NYC. Shake Shack is probably our closest competitor, and it doesn't come close.

Growing up, my parents never fed us fast food. Ever. Same with my wife. So, just like NJ, when we moved out to live together, we started eating in fast food chains way too often and gained weight. And then we stopped because we just became tired. We decided not to do the same with our children so we bring our daughter to fast food joints every now and then (like twice a month). It turns out she likes it, but because she has access to it, she's not desesperatly craving. Quite the contrary, actually. We asked her if she wanted to go the other day and she told us she'd rather eat home...
   18. zonk Posted: February 07, 2012 at 11:22 AM (#4055394)
I'll also say yes to In-and-Out -- in fact, I consider it one of just a handful of redeeming qualities about the west coast.

However, that said -- good for Tim... I lead a pretty unhealthy lifestyle and about 4-5 years ago, I cut both fast food and pop/soda/coke/soft drinks completely out of my diet. I'm still pretty amazed by how much better I feel based on what now, seems like a really small change in habits. Of course, I've basically replaced the McDs/BurgerKings/TacoBells with taquerias/mom-and-pop hot dog stands/gyro shops.

I still won't be running a marathon anytime soon - but I do find that I sleep better and feel noticeably less 'blah' than I used to.

edit: Post #18 gets a +1 from me for the first sentence.

You simply have not lived if you have never visited In and Out urge! I make it a point when I visit Socal to stop at In and Out at least once.

Family owned, honest-to-goodness emphasis on quality in both food and service, lines out the door pretty much any time of day that they are open, tasty burgers and fries. They have a potato dicer positioned right over the fry oil so they wash the potatoes and then dice them directly into the fry oil. F@cking awesome.

If they went national it would appear to be awesome at first blush, but like attempts by other outfits to go national the quality would suffer drastically I'm afraid.

Having said all that, I wouldn't make burgers and fries a daily part of my diet. Pay attention to your body, it knows what's good.

In Southern Ontario, we have a franchise called "Burrito Boyz" in most of the local college towns that is usually packed out the door from 11pm-3am on weekends. It's the most satisfying fast food you can get, and you can customize every aspect of it. Giant chunks of halibut? Yes, sir.

I don't get the love for In-n-Out fries. Their burgers are top notch, but the fries always come off to me as bland and underseasoned. It's tough to get a good fast food fry, though.

The best fries I've ever had are made by a Japanese restaurant near my apartment.

Some burger chain, whose name I can't remember, just opened up shop in Brooklyn (Fort Green area). The burgers were underwhelming, but the fries were spectacular.

Also, Five Guys is cooked to order but still gets you your order far faster than In-N-Out and Shake Shack.

The best fries I've had are at a Belgian restaurant in New York called the B Cafe. They serve them with 3 sauces and, of course, they have a selection of about 30 Belgian beers to go with them. Not a fast food place, of course.
   27. gay guy in cut-offs smoking the objective pipe Posted: February 07, 2012 at 11:55 AM (#4055440)
The thing about In-N-Out fries is the variance is pretty high. When they get them just right, they're quite good, but for every "just right" batch you have to deal with 3-4 batches where they're a little too crispy or a little too soggy. This held true at virtually every In-N-Out in the Bay Area.

Best fries I've had, while we're having this discussion, are the truffle fries at The Basin in Saratoga. Though there's a Belgian place in SF that comes a close second.

Five Guys suffer variances as well. Their meat is never frozen, so the supplier in Philadelphia may differ from the one in NYC. I actually noticed that the one in Wilmington, DE is better than the one in Philadelphia.

Shake Shack is overrated. I work near the location in Madison Square Park and when the weather is nice, the line is always prohibitively long. It's so not worth the wait. Back Forty on 12th and B get my vote for best burger in town.
   35. McCoy Posted: February 07, 2012 at 12:39 PM (#4055504)
I think the best burger from a fast food place I've had so far is from BGR. I've had Shake Shack and Five Guys and I think that both are way overpriced but at least Five Guys is good whereas Shake Shack was overpriced, small portioned, and just okay. Didn't like Five Guys' fries. McD's fries are probably still the best unless I'm drunk and then the Irish Nachos in Hyde Park are the greatest fries of all time.

Actually, the burger we do is pretty darn good. We use Australian Wagyu beef, Talbot white cheddar, and applewood smoked bacon. The only negative is that the bun doesn't really hold up well to the beef's juiciness.

I love Five Guys, but I live in DC and get the sense that the quality at the older places in this area is a lot more consistent than at some of the newer ones outside of DC. When Five Guys is good, it's really, really good IMO. The fries are far better than any other fast food place and the burgers are great.

I really like In and Out, but don't get the love. I've never been blown away by a meal there.

Never had Shake Shack, but everyone I know who's been there has said that it's overrated.

   43. boteman Posted: February 07, 2012 at 01:33 PM (#4055589)
Anyway, getting back on topic, my 4 point plan for a good life goes like this:

1) proper exercise;
2) supportive diet, as in eat what supports your exercise regimen and metabolic requirements and cut out what works against those goals;
3) proper sleep, which is more important than given credit for among the hustle-bustle set;
4) lots of sex (YMMV)

If The Timmeh only gets 1 and 2 right he's probably doing better than he was last year or previous to it. I wonder if an MLB player really gets enough restful sleep during the season, but their travel schedule no doubt cuts into that.

Point 4 is left as an exercise to the reader. I'll just say that I'm happy.
   44. Blastin Posted: February 07, 2012 at 01:41 PM (#4055597)

Never been a big fast food fan, and I've probably haven't eaten at any of them more than 3 times (total) in the last 2 decades. And then it would be just a chocolate shake at McDonalds.

Best fries I ever had were at Mills' Diner in Chateaugeay, NY. But that was 34 years ago and I have no idea if they even exist anymore. The diner that is. Actually, the town as well now that I think of it.

I grew up in SoCal, so I've eaten at In-and-Out about a million times. The burgers are good, but not so good as to deserve such a devout following. And their french fries are awful. Mentioning my feelings about In-and-Out to other SoCal residents has branded me an outcast.

My rankings of the 4 chains mentioned earlier:

1. Five Guys - This is the only fast food joint that puts halfway decent bacon on the burger.
2. Fatburger
3. In-and-Out
4. Shake Shack - I've only eaten at SS once. It was nothing special.

Best french fries I've ever eaten are at a little place called Tomy's in Garden Grove, CA. They have a great burger as well. Best burger I've ever had was at Litton's Market in Knoxville, TN.

Yeah, what's that about? I've never had Shake Shack and don't really know anything about it, but I just can't imagine how it would be worth standing in line for 30+ minutes. Surely these people could find five other quality burgers within a few blocks of there. Why would you wait in that line?

If you work in Midtown, your lunch options are sorta limited compared to see any ethnic outer borough neighborhood, at least if you aren't willing to spend more than say $12.

Also, 5 guys is over-rated. Of course it's better than your average fast food, it's twice as expensive! I'd prefer almost any local burger shop over 5 guys. The price is the same and the burgers will be better.

Eddieot - Thanks for the tip! I'm working from home today but I will definitely give Blue Smoke a try. I haven't tried Shorty's - being from the Delaware Valley, my standard for cheesesteaks is pretty high and cheesesteaks are one of the rare food items this town doesn't do consistently well. 99 Miles from Philly on 3rd and....12th? does pretty well to replicate the formula of a greasy-ass Philly cheesesteak.

I didn't think to mention Cookout in my previous post. I'd rank it's burgers about on par with Fatburger, just behind Five Guys. Where Cookout excels is the sheer depth of their menu. I'm particularly fond of their vast selection of milkshakes. The cherry cobbler shake is my favorite.

Next time anyone is in Lawrence, KS, eat at The Burger Stand downtown. It's not fast food; in fact, it's one of those gourmet burger places that have become all the rage. But they also serve the best burgers I've ever had. The regular fries are just OK and tend to suffer a lot of variance. Great truffle fries, however.

As far as fast-food burgers go, Portillo's easily tops the list. I've only had Five Guys once but was pretty unimpressed -- fries were rather bland and the burger was not bad but still unremarkable. McDonald's, BK and Wendy's all have their spots as places to fill-up on the cheap, although I haven't visited any of those three in quite a while.

And then there's White Castle. Oh sweet, sweet sliders -- it's been too long.

“You take your first bite of a McDonald’s burger and it’s like ‘Why did I buy this?’”

I have this experience every time I go to any crassfood place now. I want it when I order it, then it's gross during the first bite.

Maybe it's the knowledge that you're almost literally eating garbage that's been flavored with synthesized chemical spray.

This happened to me with KFC a few years ago. I hadn't had it in 20 years, had 20 minutes to kill before me movie started and was hungry. I walked by a KFC, it smelled good. I took one bite and realized what an awful mistake I had made. Truly horrific stuff.

I only eat fast food when I am travelling and have no other choice (in a airport terminal or by the highway)

Too greasy. Fer crissakes, they do call them "butterburgers".

Forget burgers, what's the best bigtime fast-food drive-through item out there? I used to be partial to the gyros at Miami Subs but I may have been swayed by the delicious novelty of getting a hot gyro at 4AM. During long road trips Mrs. Redneck and I will both schedule our stops around a Krystals if there's one on the way.

The last time I could even look at a KFC without being revolted was ten years ago. Me and my workmates went there for lunch, and I ordered the chicken (imagine that). It nearly made me puke.

Just out of curiosity, is there a single fast food burger joint where you can still get a rare hamburger? In some areas it's hard even to find a sit-down restaurant that'll give you the blood, and I think the last fast food place that served them rare was the old Roy Rogers chain in its first decade or so, back in the 70's. Since cooking red meat beyond the rare / medium rare stage kind of defeats the whole point of eating red meat, I've pretty much given up on fast food restaurants for burgers, even the semi-upscale ones.

Praise for White Castle invalidates anything else you have to say.
W/ 5 Guys fries, I recommend the cajun seasoning. And bringing six or so friends to share them with. Their burgers are variable in quality but peak above any national chain I've experienced (have not had in-n-out).

[All this said, I got takeout from a taqueria for lunch, albeit a gentrified one.]

Yeah, I meant to point this out the first time someone criticized 5 Guys fries. You have to get them with the seasoning.

Look, nobody is saying "hey lets take the family out to White Castle for dinner." But when you've just been released on an I-bond, and you're somewhere in the half-way stage between being drunk and being hung-over...

...stumbling into White Castle at 4:30 am brings comfort and a sense that everything will eventually be all right. Sometimes you just have to eat the food you deserve to eat.

Is Steak and Shake really not a thing outside of the South? I've never really been a huge fan of the place but I know of folks down here who swear by it. Also, Waffle House gets huge plaudits for being solid and inexpensive but I dislike it rather immensely.

Shake Shack is overrated, In-n-Out is about even w/ Five Guys, maybe better on the burger but worse on the fries.

Can we agree that Qdoba is superior to both Moe's (terrible) and Chipotle (underwhelming, too pricy)?

Everyone in this thread making absolutist statements is wrong. In fact, they're absolutely wrong.

The people I know who have moved here from CA state emphatically that there is no better burger on God's green Earth than In-N-Out, and everything else is the worst. burger. ever. The people I know who have moved to CA from here shrug and say In-N-Out is like Five Guys but with much worse fries*, and don't understand the fanatical devotion In-N-Out has. People I know from other western states where In-N-Out is located seem to agree with the latter group. I've never been to In-N-Out, but I'm going to CA this summer and hope to check it out.

I can stomach KFC, McDonald's, and Five Guys, and have visited each in the last week. Lightweights.

I'll give Five Guys another shot, this time with the aforementioned seasoning on the fries. It's essentially the only true burger place within walking distance, and I've been craving either a burger or a good gyro for a while now...

I've had great success going Paleo. (Well more primal than paleo). I recommend it.

I've been doing a somewhat half-assed version of the paleo diet (I mean, I'm not going to completely kick things like pizza, beer and Honey Nut (among other carbs) to the curb), hoping that eating a bit more fat would result in less of my general lethargy/exhaustion. I think I've had some luck, but still find my self feeling tired too often. (Obviously I understand that diet could be just one of many culprits here.)

villageidiom, you can tell In-N-Out to deep fried the french fries(In-N-Out call it the well done fries), and they are much tastier. The thing about In-N-Out isn't that its the best burger ever(Its pretty damn good, but I can imagine a better burger... somewhere), its the fact you can order any combination that you can think of, and they'll do it for you without charging you extra, within reason.

Want the triple decker? Okay, but it'll cost extra, but you want grilled onions, cooked medium rare, with well done fries? And its all free with your meal? Now, that's service.

Which other fast food place would even dare try to cook a burger medium rare?
   91. Der_K is feeling better now. Posted: February 07, 2012 at 06:13 PM (#4055894)
I've tended to think of Steak and Shake as a Midwest (specifically Indiana, which is where they're based out of) thing - looks like that's their two markets. Haven't had it since I was 10 - no opinion.

Moe's is definitely terrible. (It's also the dominant chain of that style where I live - grrrrrr.) I slightly prefer Chipotle over Qdoba, but could go either way. I wish the former offered more exotic choices and the latter made "signature selections" that were more inline with my preferences. Luckily, I've got a host of local options that I prefer over those two (which are fine, don't get me wrong).
Oh, among national chains, Baja Fresh was pretty solid. No longer in my neck of the woods, though.

Which other fast food place would even dare try to cook a burger medium rare?
Not legal in my state. Otherwise, 5 Guys does that other stuff too.

Not legal in my state.

That seems to be the case in the DC area, too, but does anyone know why that ridiculous law only seems to apply to fast food joints and not to sit-down restaurants? Is it an implicit recognition of the dog food quality of most fast food beef?

Haven't tried Moe's or Qdoba, but Baja Fresh runs rings around Chipotle. The marinade they use on their chicken and beef before they grill is fantastic and they have the best salsa bar hands down; a blend of the spicy red and smoky chipotle salsas kicks ass on just about anything ...

I love Steak and Shake, and it's not just in the South - they opened one when I was living in Lansing, Michigan (though I assume they found out I was there and figured it would be guaranteed to turn a profit just from my orders).

As for Waffle House... I could eat at the Waffle House 3 meals a day forever. When I was in college, they had an all-you-can-eat menu that probably singlehandedly took 10 years off my life. It kills me living in California that there's not one nearby. I'm in severe scattered and covered withdrawal.

Even at a sit-down restaurant, I wouldn't chance it. I think the only way to do medium-rare or bloodier is if you're buying and grinding your own cuts of meat.

Best burgers in DC...Rogue State. There was one in the Dupont area that was shut down in '10 due to a law firm complaining about the smell. I think they rebranded themselves as Black and Orange and are now expanding. Either way, their Jerk Burger is...my mouth is watering.

Chipotle is probably my favorite national fast food chain. Qdoba is good, but not as good as Chipotle. Moe's is pretty bad, though they have a decent breakfast burrito if you can find a location that serves it.

I view Qdoba as the red head stepchild to Chipotle. Chipotle is good for a chain and if your area doesn't have a good Mexican/Latin presence then they might be your best bet. I stay away from Chipotle because it is too much food and I'll regret it later. Baja Fresh is not bad but I didn't really find anything about it all that special.

This harkens back to the peanut allergy thread we had the other day. There is an extremely small chance you get sick from eating undercooked meat, even ground beef, and because of that we don't get to eat it if we so choose too.

Doing it yourself is probably far more dangerous than going to a store and getting it. Generally speaking the dirtiest place for food is in your possession.
