Eddie Guardado caught by surprise by release

Embitterday Eddie…

In his 17 years of professional baseball, Eddie Guardado had never been released before this morning, when the Washington Nationals included him in their first round of cuts.

“They caught him totally, pretty much, by surprise,” said Kevin Kohler, Guardado’s agent. “I don’t think he was expecting it at all.”

...Guardado, whom the Nationals signed to a minor league contract in late December, pitched just two innings this spring. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits, but he expected more of an opportunity, Kohler said, particularly in his specialty: retiring left-handed batters.

When Kohler spoke with Guardado today, “he said, ‘I’ve been busting my [butt] out here everyday, and they give me two innings?’ ” Kohler said. “If he signs somewhere, it will be with someone he knows. He’s going to have to trust them; let’s put it like that.

“I don’t know what they’re thinking. It’s not like the other guys are really tearing it up.”

Omar, can he play shortstop?

Yeah, but he's been traded for Hamburger and a Chick.

Sorry, I've had too much to drink.

It's only a tiny bit rough on him. He's pitched two poor innings, and in the second one it appeared that his fielders were as much (or maybe more) at fault as he was.

He's very right about the rest of the guys not doing well, though. I'm not sure if this was the last day before contracts became guaranteed, but if it wasn't I'd have been inclined to give Everyday Eddie one more chance.

No, but I bet he'd be a swell backup catcher.

If it's any consolation, Eddie, I'm surprised too.

Yeah, no kidding. The Pirates' decision to cut bait on Matt Capps looks pretty sage in the very early returns.

I guess when you go thru life as a typical pro ball player the first third is every one telling you how great you are, the second third is people telling you they expect more, and the final third is people telling you that you suck and you were never that great in the first place.

Welcome to stage three.

Biff caught by surprise by Eddie Guardado still being around

Last September, he told a Mariners reporter that 2009 would be it for him. "I think this is going to be it for me Shannon. My heart is still there but my body is telling me it is time."
