Eduardo Nuñez asked for release and got it from Yankees

Hopefully Yangervis’ nickname is “Never Nervous.”

Eduardo Nuñez figured the Yankees had had enough of him, so he asked for his release and got it.

The Yankees, needing to make a move on their 40-man roster to get Yangervis Solarte on it, designated Nuñez for assignment before Tuesday night’s season opener, ending the 26-year-old’s career with the club…

The Yankees have 10 days to either trade or release Nuñez, who will have interested parties. The Cubs, in need of infield help, could be interested, as could the Blue Jays, who need help at second and, after the Opening Day injury to Jose Reyes, short.

A source said the Astros, who would get the first crack at Nuñez if a trade isn’t worked out, could be an option, as well…

Nuñez, who often struggled in the field, hit .265 with a .280 on-base percentage this spring but lost his spot, [Yankees GM Brian] Cashman said, more because of what Solarte did, hitting .429 with a team-best nine RBIs. With Brian Roberts’ recent injury history, the Yankees felt Solarte, a better second baseman, was a better option than Nuñez.

Well, Nune5 might put it together at some point at the plate and be a average + hitter (for a MI) ... but sakes alive, he plays every ball in the infield like he was being rolled a live grenade.

I don't get it. How can any team be more in need of IF help than the Yankees? If he doesn't fit the Yankee needs, what with Jeter, Roberts, and Johnson at SS, 2B, and 3B, what team could possibly use him?

While I'm no Darwin Barney fan, IF would seem to be the least of the Cubs' problems. He might outhit some of our OF.

I thought that was funny. Then I looked it up and, lo, ZiPS projects him as pretty much dead even with Junior Lake and Ryan Kalish.

None really could...he's just not a very could player (or at least hasn't been so far).

Nunez can hit a tiny bit. Not enough to start, but enough that maybe he's an above average utility man? Unfortunately we will never know, because no team will ever stick with a backup IF who constantly blunders routine plays.

Nunez has some talent, he can make plays, but he made some early errors when he first came up and seems to have never got over the semi-yips that have plagued him at the Major League level.

Solarte is going to hit a little bit, Girardi will tell the media Yangervis reminds him of Ernie Banks, and then Solarte will sign a 550m contract with the Montpelier Saps in 2022 as a top 5 player. The Yankees will win one WS. Tony Womack and Nunez will commiserate on the regular.

Damn Yankees.

I am so happy to see Nunez go. He is a terrible fielder and baserunner and despite the wishcasting of many in NY, including Girardi, he can't actually hit either.
