Good for him, how cool that he's having success. Hope he can stay good enough to get one really big contract ($40 million or so) to really reap the benefit of his smarts and hard work.

He signed a 3-year deal with the Brewers. He's 30 now. Let's say his improvement is real, although not at the level that he's currently showing. He comes back to earth a bit, maybe an OPS+ of 140-145.

What kind of contract does he get? If it was just one year, you think maybe it's a fluke. But if he does it for 3 years then you probably treat him like any other slugger with those numbers. But he's 33. He doesn't get a long contract, but he has to do better than 4/40, right? I'm thinking 4/60.

Yeah - I was too lazy to look up his age. 4 years at $60 or $64 million could be right if he keeps it up for these three years.

Hmm... Does "player option" not mean what I think it does? On BBRef, it says that in 2020 there is a "$7.5M player option, $1M buyout". Doesn't "player option" mean the player decides and "team option" mean the team decides? It wouldn't make sense for there to be a buyout on a player decision.

In looking up an article reporting the signing, it looks like it's a team option. So if Thames keeps this up, they'll exercise the option and he won't be a free agent until 34. Maybe he only gets 3/45 in that case.

Although, will he be a free agent even then? I guess not. He'll only have 4 years of service time. I guess he won't be eligible for free agency until he's 36.

Anyway, really cool article on his transformation. There's always a lot of disagreement on what can be taught/learned vs. what is a natural skill. I think it's really neat how Thames looked at what Bonds did and was able to teach himself to do some of the same things.

100 bucks says Thames's agent is on the phone with him right now telling him not to make any "Hey, I did what Barry Bonds did in 2001!" statements whatsoever. That's just asking for trouble.

So if he had taken all his free time and learned Korean, he really wouldn't be here today would he?

Leisure, the basis of culture.

Fantastic book. Of course, the argument of that book implies a fairly important distinction between boredom and leisure.

Gaelan. Book summary please?

If he puts up those sorts of numbers then he's Edwin Encarnacion who reportedly turned down 4/$80 and ended up settling for 3/$69. Teams are generally comfortable signing guys through age 36 so that's about the contract length he'll be offered in that scenario.

Or this one. See also "Conspicuous Consumption."

(It's nearly 30 years since I read that stuff, I should give it a new read sometime.)
