ESPN.com: AP: Clip Shows Boy With Beer Bottle

A video snippet from a Philadelphia Phillies broadcast appears to show a little boy in the stands taking a drink from a beer bottle . . .

Police say they are not investigating.

Phillies fans have brought unfavorable publicity to the ballclub this year. In April, a drunken fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl. In May, a police officer used a Taser on a teenager who ran onto the field.

What do you have to do to get your children taken away in Philadelphia?

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH A KID HAVING A SIP OF BEER OR WINE. Good grief, Charlie Brown.

One of the only pictures of me from my childhood was a picnic at my Uncle and Aunts. I was 6 or 7 at the time, and I have a death grip on my beer bottle. I remember it clearly, what a golden moment. It was the late 50s, it was hot, we were Geman Catholics in Cincinnati. It felt so ... natural. The next time I got a full bottle from Dad was when I was 20.

Agreed completly. My parents let me 'try' their beer, knowing i wouldn't care for it. Pretty smart of them. I still don't care for it.

Thirded. Parents can still buy alcohol for their kids in Wisconsin at bars, taverns and retaurants as long as they are present. It is not uncommon at all to see a young kids spinning on a bar stool next to his Dad at a tavern in much of the state.

My kid's 2 1/2, and he's probably taken five to 10 sips of my beers in his young life. I don't give it to him of course, but he does it when I'm not looking and across the room or something like that. Big deal. He--and the Republic--will survive.

Same. Growing up in binge-drinking North Dakota, it was easier for me to develop a taste for spiced rum than for beer. Eventually I started to like beer, maybe a little too much. This cautionary tale is going awry, so I'll stop.

When I was a kid, getting a sip of beer was one of the many cool things about going to a ballgame with grownups. I mean, it was just a sip, but it was an ADULT BEVERAGE.
Which somehow smelled exactly like the bathrooms.
I had so much to learn.

I remember my grandfather letting my brother and I take a sip of his whiskey when we were kids. Not the end of the world, although I don't think I would do the same with my kids (and certainly not in public, with t.v. cameras around).

My sister was on TV as a young child at a White Sox game having a sip of beer. According to my dad Harry said something like "now there's a real Sox fan."

Decades later she had a ruptured brain aneurysm (she lived and came out none the worse for wear thankfully). Were the two incidents connected?

Doesn't it seem obvious? That if you make alcohol some kind of special, forbidden thing that only adults can enjoy, that kids will want it very, very badly? Mine has expressed no interest, but when he asks, he's getting a taste. Considering the careful surveillance he performs on his food for such exotic things as legumes and onions, I don't think he's going to like it.

Gee, lets see... selling alcohol at a stadium buried in ads for beer for a sport that lives on beer money and has had teams owned by beer companies in the past, promoting bringing your kids to these stadiums, and then there is shock ... SHOCK! ... that children are seen drinking beer while there.

Well, duh, if you promote, encourage, even celebrate drinking beer at the ballpark then of course kids taken there will end up drinking some.

Just glad it wasn't a pregnant woman - drinking while pregnant skyrockets the odds of fetal alcohol syndrome and even one drink can cause it. Check out the kids at many children's aid societies and you'll find a lot of children who pay the price of their parents drinking. ::jumps off soapbox::

I guarantee you that it is not. There is no proven safe level of alcohol consumption, but there has never been a documented case of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome where the mother had fewer than 8 drinks a week during pregnancy.

This is what I suspected. I can't imagine most physicians, in their most honest moments, would say there's anything wrong with, say, a drink per week or so after the first trimester.

I'm sure going through labor is awful and all, but not drinking for nine months is what's really too horrible to contemplate.

i've been hearing this in recent years. i think the general call for complete teetotalling in pregnancy is because its hard to determine the exact boundary between what's okay and what's not. the consequences of guessing wrong are pretty grim.
