ESPN.com: Carl Crawford to get second opinion on sore left elbow

...after the Red Sox medical staff recommended amputation.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford plans to seek a second opinion on his troublesome left elbow, manager Bobby Valentine said after Tuesday’s 11-2 win over the Twins.

Crawford had returned to Florida on Tuesday night, where he has been rehabbing, Valentine said, after being examined in Boston earlier in the day. Valentine said he had no other information on the condition of Crawford’s elbow other than it was “sore.”

“It’s always serious, the way I look at it,” Valentine said, “but it doesn’t seem major.” Valentine had acknowledged before the game that the elbow remains a cause for concern.

“Until a guy is 100 percent, you always have concern,” Valentine said.

What's the record for total salary on the 60-day DL?

Mattbert submitted this first so my "Maybe they should check his mitochondria" lead is lost to the nether.

My opinion: "Yup, it's sore."

Crawford: "Doc, how's the elbow?"

Doctor: "Just terrible, Carl."

Crawford: "I want a second opinion."

Doctor: "You really sucked last year."

CRAWFORD SEEKS SECOND OPINION; VALENTINE CONCERNED CRAWFORD NOT GIVING 100 PERCENT

Well, if the Red Sox could afford almost $15 million for Crawford's zero WAR last year, I suppose they can handle this year's $19.5 million payment for the same level of performance.

Ross, Sweeney, and even Marlon Byrd are just better players right now. Sad but true.

Random and probably incorrect guess: Carl Pavano?

Hmmm... and that brings to mind, maybe don't sign long term contracts with guys named Carl.

Albert Belle got 37 million 2001-2003 without playing at all. That beats Pavano handily.

This preserves my diehard hope that Paxton is the best Crawford the Red Sox have ever had.

Holy ####, I can't stand Carl Crawford. He is the Babe Ruth of the 21st century for the Red Sox, except that everything went wrong for 86 years after they dealt Ruth, whereas this next 86-year drought began after they acquired Crawford.

His contract is an absolute albatross for this team, just like Lackey's is...but Crawford's contract is for almost twice as much as Lackey's.

Honorable mention, though not in actual contention due to not being "60 day DL", has to go to Bobby Bonilla, who is currently in the early stages of collecting about $30 million from the Mets, over the span 2011-2035. Bonilla stopped playing after the 2001 season, and hasn't played for the Mets since 1999.

First, it began several years before they acquired Crawford. Second, it's gonna be a lot longer than 86 years this time.

Pavano was originally a Sock.

It's not quite Belle's level of loot, but Mike Hampton got $29,003,543 for missing all of 06 and 07.

IIRC, the Rockies may have picked up a big chunk of that...and AFAIK the O's at least got insurance on Belle, so he didn't really cost them anything except any deductible they may have had (Does players insurance have a deductible and if so, how bloody high is it anyhow?)

Give Hampton credit where it's due. The man actually came back and pitched...well sorta...when not re-injuring himself...for three more seasons post DL. Belle was toast once his hip was done-the O's knew it, he knew it, everyone in Baltimore knew it. The only reason they kept him around was to collect the insurance.

So someone is questioning the original diagnosis as provided by the Red Sox medical staff...I am shocked!
