ESPN: D-Backs sign Byrnes to $2.25 million deal

Kookie, Kookie, lend me…out for a year.

Outfielder Eric Byrnes has agreed to a one-year, $2.25 million contract with Arizona and promises to bring energy and enthusiasm to the Diamondbacks.

Byrnes, 29, slumped to a .226 batting average in a nomadic 2005 season that had him playing for Oakland, Colorado and Baltimore. In 2004, Byrnes hit .283 for Oakland with 20 home runs and 73 RBI.

...“The direction of the team reminds me a lot of how the A’s were when I came up with them,” Eric Byrnes said. “It seems like they have a lot of good prospects just breaking in and obviously established veterans like Gonzo [Luis Gonzalez] and Shawn Green.”

Can't win 'em all.

According to Verbal Kint Gambadoro, the Dbacks had agreed to a two year deal with DaVanon but he failed his physical; supposedly his shoulder is shot. So Byrnes was option J.

I was really hoping that they would just play Quentin in center until they could trade either Green or Gonzo, hopefully bringing up Chris Young who would be ready at that point. Not like this is awful or anything, just somewhat unnecessary.

Tony Clark is established, just not so obvious. Despite his height.

So Byrnes signs Byrnes. What's next, Schuerholz trades for Schierholtz (Nate)? Kevin Towers trades for Josh? Is Mike Ryan still with the Twins?
   6. Kyle S Posted: December 31, 2005 at 04:56 AM (#1800801)
Schuerholtz's kid already plays in the Braves system. Cam Bonifay's son is still in the Pirates org IIRC - maybe Cam could go back there?
   7. shoewizard Posted: December 31, 2005 at 05:06 AM (#1800804)
I figured a Green/Terrero platoon in CF and Quentin everyday in right would not be any worse defensively than Byrnes in Cf and Green in Rf. But hey, what do I know. I guess even though Green has not hit lefties for snot for over 2 years now, they still can't approach him with a platoon. What garbage.

Oh well....the owners told him to get a CF, so he got one. At least it's only one year. He can't hurt too much. Maybe he can go run over Green on opening day and make room for Quentin. After all, that "reckless abandon" needs to be put to good use, right?

Come on Byrnes isn't THAT bad. He can hit a little and is really entertaining. It's only 2.25M.

Yep, and his performance is a little suspect. I remember him when he was a gangly kid. But he did go to Auburn, so he might have that special something-something that all Auburn alumni seem to have.

Byrnes will be an entertaining placeholder for Young. If they keep him, he'd be a decent platoon partner for Green in 2007. The Diamondbacks should dominate this division for the next several years.
   11. Robert S. Posted: December 31, 2005 at 05:51 AM (#1800833)
I just realized how much I hate that outfield. Hopefully, Spaz will take out at least one of the other two.

The most positive anyone is about this deal is to note that it's only 1 year. I think you're wrong about the bias, most of us are slanted towards the D-backs now because they have so many MVP-ceiling hitting prospects, not because of Byrnes. The biggest bias on BTF is towards young players who haven't proven anything yet, and against known mediocrities.
   15. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: December 31, 2005 at 02:37 PM (#1801014)
I wouldn't be shocked to see Josh Bonifay get a cup of coffee at some point, honestly. He's getting a little older and his knees are shot, but he's got a surprising amount of bat. He hit .282/.339/.556 at AA last year, and while he was old for the league, Altoona's a pretty brutal HR park.

Most 24th-round picks wish they could do as well.

After the last few years, I find it refreshing. ;)

Seriously, Byrnes should be commended for what he HASN'T done, i.e., trade away excellent young prospects, sign mediocre free agents to long term deals, push the panic button, or try to "make a splash", etc.

The fact that he has freed up the logjam at the corners a bit, manged to get some decent if not spectacular talent in return for a couple of salary dumps, and positioned the team nicely to make a run at some free agent pitching NEXT year and the year after when there is a better list to choose from is a bonus.

   18. shoewizard Posted: December 31, 2005 at 03:18 PM (#1801034)
One other thing. The team was outsocred by 160 runs last year, and the conventional wisdom has been to point out the pythag won-loss. However, I think everyone has come to realize that there are underlying factors that contributed to the huge run differential. They were actually unlucky at home to some degree, scoring .4 runs less at home than on the road despite having a similar home road OPS. And they had a few really really bad performances from a small group of relivers that really balooned their runs allowed way out of proportion to the amount of innings they pitched. They suffered 5 or 6 ridiculous blowouts that really messed with their pythag badly. But at the end of the day, those were only 5-6 losses.

So in a warped kind of way, they were unlucky to have such a large run differential. It should have been about 100-120, not 160. Thats still a well below .500 team, but I don't think their 77-85 record from last year is so far removed from the talent they put out there.

It's tough to figure what this years team will do, but anywhere from 70-80 wins is a reasonable projection. And you just never know in this game. They have gotten younger. And when you get younger, there is more chance to get better.

Lets put it this way. The D Backs OF defense actually IMPROVED when Green moved over to CF and Tracy went out to right. Thats how bad Jose Cruz Jr. was in Cf.

It's still amazing to me how that guy can look so good in RF and so lousy in CF. The difference is stark.

Yeah, I know, I know - Byrnes was holding out for 1/2.25 from the D-Backs.
   23. shoewizard Posted: December 31, 2005 at 03:55 PM (#1801055)
Actually, he turned down more money and multi year to play for the D backs because he is going to get to play CF.

That makes sense. I actually turned down Secretary of Labor because my desk at my present job is by the window.
   25. shoewizard Posted: December 31, 2005 at 04:12 PM (#1801064)
Think about it Rob. Take a 2 year deal to go be a 4th outfielder in some pitchers park, or take a one year deal, play CF everyday in a great hitters park, with a chance to put up some numbers, and try Free Agency again next year at the still young age of 30.

Hell, I'd've done that for $2M. I'd've even packed my intensity at no extra charge.

this comment is so stupid, I'm suprised Rob Base never thought of posting it on primer.

signing a defensively challenged right handed outfielder with mediocre pop is far too smart for omar. he trades his gold glove centerfielder (who's signed at a bargain contract for the next two years) for a defensively challenged right handed outfielder with mediocre pop. why pay $2m when you can overpay with real talent? omar doesn't understand.

base, the byrnes signing may not be inspired, but it's far from idiotic. it's one year, not that much cash, and there's really no one better out there to acquire (unless you're in love with preston wilson). moorad and kendrick have had a hardon for eric byrnes since last year when they tried to trade for him (beane asked for carlos quentin so that was that) and now they get to fulfill their wild haired diving dude fantasy for a couple of millions. byrnes isn't blocking anyone, az didn't trade anyone to get him, and he'll be a trade bait in august. i figure he'll make a great omar acquisition to play RF at shea.

well, i have persuaded most of this site that you're an irritating troll. i'll rest on that.

As for Omar's August acquisition of Byrnes, as long as Genius Josh pays, so that not a dime of Met money is spent on this replacement-level scrub, then I don't much care. And I do hope that you will laud Omar with the same excitement that you are showing about Zona's outstanding acquisition of stars Eric and Johnny. Heck of a team. Heck of a team.
   48. 1k5v3L Posted: January 01, 2006 at 06:58 PM (#1801922)
So, you persuaded primer that I'm a troll? How so, by emailing a picture of yourself to everyone with the words, "see, that levski, he's just like me, but he's funnier?"

Anyhow, Base, I'm done talking to you. My best wishes to you and the Mets in 06.
   49. Rob Base Posted: January 01, 2006 at 07:00 PM (#1801923)

   50. 1k5v3L Posted: January 01, 2006 at 07:07 PM (#1801930)
I'm convinced. Thoroughly. You win, Base. You're a hero. The greatest thing to ever happen to primer. And you never ever resort to personal attacks.

Of course, baseball chick thinks you're racist and sexist, fwiw, and I think you're dumb as a nail. Aside from that, you're a genuine golden nugget.

If you learn street spanish, you can even teach Omar about marginal wins.
   51. Rob Base Posted: January 01, 2006 at 08:28 PM (#1802038)
More of the same, levski. Thanks for making my point for me.

Hmm... watching Levski and Base in a ######### in the middle of the winter is kinda like watching a Royals/DRays game is the middle of August. You have some vague idea that it's going on but don't really care, don't really know who to root for but are nonetheless sickly amused, and the participants make total asses out of themselves.

   56. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 07:54 PM (#1803084)
Good deal, Base. You might want to revisit those Carlos Beltran threads from about a year ago. I recall plenty of insults going her way. I don't think she has any explaining to do to you; rather, go back to some of those threads (one in the lounge) and reread the asinine comments you made to her about her lifestyle, her hometown, her spelling, her posts. You made a total fool out of yourself then, and nothing has changed since.

And she hasn't been the only poster here that you've been dogging over the years. For some reason, you've decided that you're the self appointed primer cop, whose job is to a) tell people how their jobs are inferior to your ambulance chasing gig; b) convince posters that nyc is the greatest fn city in the world and if they don't like it they are culturally or socially backward; c) patrol each thread that may have anything Mets related and harass people who may be criticizing Omar or the Mets; and d) apprarantly expose the annoying trolls on primer.

Not sure who put you on troll patrol on primer, or what makes you think anyone gives a rat's arse about your troll chasing endeavors. And if you actually would contribute to constructive NYMets talk on primer, you might be worth reading; you are, however, by far the weakest Mets "primate" here, and I am convinced that Mets threads would not lose one iota of usefullness if you started lurking more and posting less.

***

PooNani, unless Quentin tears it up in spring training and Pujols himself onto the roster, he'll start the year in AAA. There's a very good chance he'll be in Arizona some time next summer, however.

6-4-3, if you were to pretend you are any better than Base or myself, you'd have kept your mouth shut and your behind out of this. Now you've only sunk to our level. Which, by Base standards, makes you another annoying troll.
   58. Rob Base Posted: January 02, 2006 at 08:01 PM (#1803095)
levski, you have called me a racist and unless you can point to specific evidence of that, we have a serious problem here. i don't care if you say I'm stupid or an ambulance chaser or what. nobody on the board respects you too much, so that doesn't matter. bout you've crossed the line. people on here know my real-world identity and you have done something very serious in calling me a racist without any basis whatsoever. it isn't true and I'm extremely angry about it.
   59. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 08:05 PM (#1803098)
As I said, go back and reread your posts in those Beltran threads, the ones you directed at baseball chick, an african american female poster here on primer. You can't pretend you didn't know who she was, and your posts were very much aimed at belittling her for those two reasons. You can spin it any way you want, but to me at least, you came off sounding like a little racist and sexist #### in those posts, and I have no intention of changing my opinion of you. And I'm guessing that people who know your real world identity know you're not sexist or racist. So why worry about what I say? Or better yet, sue me.
   60. Rob Base Posted: January 02, 2006 at 08:10 PM (#1803104)
levski, you should consult a lawyer before offering youself as a target of a lawsuit. i have a professional obligation to tell you that.

contrary you your dispicable comments, I had no idea what race "baseball chick" was at the time of that argument and race did not enter the conversation. yes, the tone was vituperative, but it was heated in both directions. you are the one making accusations here. not me, and not baseball chick. the fact is, the beltran thread does not support your accusations. and you are courting disaster for the purpose of appearing a big man in an argument on the internet. it is unwise. i suggest that you go back and read the carlos beltran thread and then ask the moderators to delete your disgusting comments.
   61. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 08:13 PM (#1803108)
Fwiw, I do not think you're stupid. So I owe you an apology for that. And maybe b-chick didn't take your comments as seriously as I took them. And maybe other people here didn't think much of them either. I did; I formed an opinion based on them, and I see no reason to change it.

And now I'm truly done with you. I have no intention of continuing this spat.
   62. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 08:16 PM (#1803114)

Again, that was my opinion, based on comments you made. I see no reason to change my opinion on anything.
   63. Rob Base Posted: January 02, 2006 at 08:18 PM (#1803118)
levski, I don't care if you think I'm stupid. that kind of thing is said on here all the time. but to bring race into it is totally out of line. race was not a factor in the argument about carlos beltran; I don't care about anybody's race and I did not know or care about baseball chick's race at the time.

and if you don't deal with that, I cannot promise you that you are done with me.
   64. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 08:21 PM (#1803122)
Finally, I really don't care if the moderators delete my comments in this entire thread. They really contributed nothing to the discussion, and I have no particular attachment to them. Furthermore, if Base insists that my posts (or the part of my posts that refer to him) be deleted, that's fine with me too. In fact, if everyone here (including Base) will be happier that way, then I'd welcome it. There's been too much vitriol for one weekend here.

Peace.

I can really see why this thread is on a site called "Basaeball For The Thinking Fan."

Which, by Base standards, makes you another annoying troll.

No, I just sit here and mock people for acting like idiots. That just makes me another BTF poster. You make up personal crap about, Base, a poster that you disagee with and undeservedly label him to be a racist, sexist, etc. And when confronted with idiocy of your allegation, you ask a moderator to remove all evidence of you acting like a complete dickhole. That's what makes you a troll.

See the Community Standards Thread. I've made my suggestion for improving the quality of discussion...

It's Base who asked for this thread to be removed; I couldn't care less.

It's nice you get another chance to act hollier than thou.

And so long as you continue to pollute this site with your loathsome presence, I fully expect future opportunities.

FWIW,

I just heard from baseball chick via email. I am not going to quote her, but suffice it to say that she does not agree with levski's characterization of our argument over Carlos Beltran.
   83. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 10:49 PM (#1803372)
Base, in that case, she interpreted things a lot differently than I did, based on your comments. And I owe you an apology over this spat. That's all.
   84. caprules Posted: January 02, 2006 at 10:57 PM (#1803380)
For those who want to see the thread in question it's here. Rob certainly never said anything racist or sexist, but he did come off as a jerk. Lisa was "vilifying" New York, but Rob was personal with his insults to her for being a redneck (as misguided as that was). And Rob, if you see this, you probably didn't mean it this way but asking a dyslexic "can you read this" as you did in 202 can really be taken the wrong way.
   85. Rob Base Posted: January 02, 2006 at 11:03 PM (#1803386)
Hey, I didn't say I wasn't acting like an as$hole. But whatever, this whole thing is stupid and the sooner it's gone the better.
   86. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 11:08 PM (#1803389)
Post 199 in here is what I couldn't get over; especially since b-chick has said/written on many occasions that she is black. Re-reading it now, Base didn't necessary use a derogatory word directly as baseball chick, but in reality, I was left with the impression that Base was doing so. Maybe I was extra sensitive to his words because I knew BC was black, and I felt she was unfairly attacked by Base (esp. comments like 199, 202, etc.) Again, it appears BC didn't take it that way, which is all good.
   87. 1k5v3L Posted: January 02, 2006 at 11:12 PM (#1803398)
And again, I owe Base an apology for misunderstanding you in that ill fated Beltran thread, and for bringing it up here. It wasn't the right thing to do, and I normally wouldn't have done it, had I had more sleep and less coffee when I wrote post 50. My apology isn't worth much, probably, but I do mean it.
   88. Rob Base Posted: January 02, 2006 at 11:28 PM (#1803430)
Just re-read the thread. PWN3D!
   89. shoewizard Posted: January 02, 2006 at 11:51 PM (#1803475)
So, how about that Eric Byrnes....

I bet he hits .300 and wins a gold glove this year.
   90. 1k5v3L Posted: January 03, 2006 at 12:17 AM (#1803530)
shoewiz, if he hits .300, he might actually win a gold glove, the way those awards are handed out.

base, I'm not sure you should really be so proud of yourself if you really re-read the beltran thread.

anyhow, peace. before 643 bans me from primer.

Check out MHS's Community Standards thread. I'm no longer advocating the banishment of BTF's dimmer bulbs...

The nicest thing that I can say about Byrnes in center is that he's an improvement over Green. Slight improvement. Really, the Giants and Dbacks have a nice little race going on between which has the worst outfield defense. One the one hand, the Giants have a guy who's a bit closer to average in center. Neither left fielder can thrown worth a darn, but at least Gonzalez can cover ground (relatively speaking). And while both Green and Alou are statues, Green can put a little muster when he absolutely has to. I'd probably take the Dbacks (only because I don't think Winn is that much better Byrnes, but they're both extremely bad).

Until the Dbacks relegate Byrnes to 4th outfielder and bring up Young to play center, these two teams will have historically bad outfields. At least the Dbacks have an outfield with Young in center and Quentin in right to look forward to, while the Giants have Jason Ellison and Dan Ortemier to look forward to in 2007/8. Yeah.

You guys DO know I was kidding about Byrnes hitting .300 and winning a gold glove, right?

ya know, you have to expect a dbacks fan to be in a bad mood in a thread about how they signed eric byrnes.
