ESPN: Beano Cook, staple of the game, dies

Beano Cook, a longtime staple of the Pittsburgh sports scene and an ESPN college football studio commentator since 1986, has died. He was 81.

“You only have to bat a thousand in two things—flying and heart transplants,” Cook once said. “Everything else, you can go 4-for-5.”

Never forget.

Is this the 'Beano Cook' who used to post here?

This is the first midgets article? What kind of a website is this?

Wow, I lived in Pittsburgh for ten years and always enjoyed seeing Beano Cook on TV, but never knew he was connected to Pittsburgh.

Or baseball ... wait, the only thing the article says about baseball is this:

One of Cook's most famous quips came in 1981, after then-commissioner Bowie Kuhn offered lifetime passes to baseball games to U.S. hostages returning from Iran. "Haven't they suffered enough?" Cook said.

An early leader in the anti-baseball movement! The godfather to Bill Simmons.

RIP Beano Cook.

I thought he was 81 twenty years ago.

RIP, Beano.

I expect he'll win two, maybe three lifetime achievement awards.

Beano was awesome. Curmudgeonly entertaining, says I.

I'm not seeing how Simmons is "anti-baseball" - after all, he penned an entire book of columns about the Red Sox.

I was a big Beano fan. I'm looking forward to a nice montage of Beano clips over the weekend, highlighted by him wearing that Sun Devil costume with a trident.

Beano's moments (including the Sun Devil costume)

He often talked about how he wanted to be buried with a Michigan football helmet.

Beano was fabulous and entertaining and LOVED college football. RIP.
