ESPN: Brewers 19-2 in past 21 after Zack Greinke stifles Dodgers

Greinke won his fifth straight start and Jerry Hairston Jr. singled in two runs to lift the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night for their 19th victory in 21 games.
...
Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young winner, scattered five hits and struck out eight over seven innings to lower his ERA to 1.57 over this five-game winning streak.

“It wasn’t a great outing, but I made big pitches when they needed to be made,” Greinke said.

The Brewers have only scored 11 times in the past five games, all victories, because of their dominant pitching staff and just enough clutch hits.

Brewers have apparently been time-warped back to 1968, or at least 1988.  When Tony Gwynn, Jr. hits a HR, something’s… off ... with the universe.

Greinke has outrageous peripherals this year. xFIP of 2.27, ERA of 4.08. Totally unfair considering how dominant the guy has been.

Brewer fans can thank me for dropping Greinke from my fantasy team after his 7/3 start which raised his ERA for the season to 5.66 and cost me the ERA point that week.

Since then, 4-1 with a 1.75 ERA.

At the start of July, he had an ERA of 5.63 with an xFIP of 2.12! Crazy.

His ERA has been going in the right direction though - he's lowered it in each of his last 7 starts.

Didn't somebody once say the Brewers were going to wet the bed?

Speaking of Tony Gwynn, Jr, what is it with the Dodgers and Gwynn's that aren't Tony, Sr? I remember 'back in the day' when Chris Gwynn was on the Dodgers (without much success) and this year they've been playing Tony Jr. (without much success). Maybe they'll finally give up and convince Senior to come out of retirement....

They also had Wilton and Pedro Guerrero

Vinny's been accidentally calling him "Chris" this year.

They also had Ramon and Pedro Martinez. Sigh.

Well, when a guy's moving into the powerhouse NL Central you expect his stats to plummet.

151/29 k/bb in 121 IP, he has been a tad gopherballish this year, BABIP a little high, opponent batting OPS+ is 90

I don't get it

As is often the case when a pitcher has a much worse ERA than peripherals would indicate, Greinke has had trouble with his timing/clutchiness:

Split      BA  OBP  SLG  OPS
RISP     .309 .375 .574 .949
---      .229 .277 .389 .666
Men On   .256 .306 .461 .767

Gwynn Jr. has actually been a solid player this year * if * his defensive numbers are legit. (He grades as a plus cf and off the charts corner of - add plus baserunning to that and he hasn't been a problem (which is not to say that you want to stick with him going forward).

Tony Gwynn Jr. has actually been the best left fielder the Dodgers had this year.

no, you're confused!!!

:)

when a team is hot, what are you gonna do? a streak of, what, 19-2 is how a team puts away the division. i guess the question now is, when do you decide they aren't just hot, but maybe they are also good?
