ESPN: Daniels: Sam Adams, Bud Selig on All-Beer team

I guess our calling Rick Bladt “BLATZ” doesn’t count. Too bad (hiccup).

Last Saturday, the world observed Adolphus Busch’s 171st birthday. The patriarch of the Anheuser-Busch/InBev family of brewers, Adolphus presumably endorses the unveiling of the All-Beer Team. So raise a glass and toast (responsibly, of course) the following individuals for the suds and substance of their deeds:

Bob Schaefer: As any advertising connoisseur knows, Schaefer had a marketing plan that could never float today. It called itself “the beer to have when you’re having more than one.” Curiously, Bob Schaefer decided to take the slogan to heart. He served as interim manager of the Kansas City Royals in 1991. And for the sake of repetition, he did it again—this time for 17 games instead of just one—14 years later. He was also a Royals coach—twice—from 1988-91 and again from 2002-05. Bob is no fool, however. He led the 1981 Greensboro Hornets, the Yankees’ Class A affiliate, to a 98-43 record and the South Atlantic League championship.

Bud Selig: He’s not only the commissioner of Major League Baseball; he’s a contradiction in beer-branding terminology. Allan Huber Selig is known as Bud, but the team he once owned, the Milwaukee Brewers, is heavily affiliated with Miller. (As in the two practically share a logo and the team plays in Miller Park.)

And don't forget Mike Schmidt -- Schmidt's beer was a major Philly brewery for over 120 years (including during most of Michael Jack's Phillies tenure).

When I was in Utah a couple of weeks ago, I saw a sign for a microbrew called Polygamy Porter with the tagline, "Why have just one?"

Obviously Bernie Brewer would be the mascot, right? I also nominate "El Presidente" Dennis Martinez, Mike Busch, Lefty O'Doul(s).

He wasn't much of a ballplayer, but you have to include Samuel J. Smith.

He stepped all over that one. It's "the one beer to have when you're having more than one." His quotation loses all the charm and cleverness of the real slogan.

Allan Huber Selig
Huber is a long-time Wisconsin beer brand, now owned by Mountain Crest Brewery of Calgary.

No Lester Weideman?

Man, those Beatrice Blues alums don't get any respect.

what about this guy?

or this one?

and the beer-connection only works for Kiwis but this guy can also be on the Dick Pole all-stars.

EDIT: and if we extend to fortified wines, we can add Mad Dog ... though I am disappointed to see that apparently nobody in MLB history has ever had the nickname Thunderbird. I hereby nominate Jason Heyward to be Thunderbird.

EDIT2, the one edit to have when you're having more than one: Miller Huggins as player/manager.

Does anyone drink just one beer? What's the point?

The flavor, unless you're a girl, or have a lower back tattoo.

The cleanup hitter has to be Jimmie "Dos Equis" Foxx.

#3: Polygamy Porter is pretty decent. I grabbed a sampler case of brew ("Party in a Box") when I was out there a few years ago - it had that one, 1st Amendment Lager (both by Wasatch), Squatter's Provo Girl, and Squatter's Full Suspension Pale Ale - and it was worth the price. I regret not having picked up Captain Bastard's Oatmeal Stout as well, though mostly I was and am just amused by the name.

I would also like to extend a large wtf to the dichotomy that allows me to purchase beer in Utah at 3 a.m. but does not permit me to buy it past 9 p.m. in Wisconsin.

I can explain this one.

The tavern lobby in Wisconsin is very powerful. In fact, so powerful a 1st DUI is not a crime in Wisconsin, the only US state. The tavern lobby desires that you buy beer in a bar, not at retail. Thus the enforcement of 9pm, with scant exceptions.

Otherwise, no state can match the sure accessibility of beer/liquor of Wisconsin. From parents buying kids booze, to children working behind the bar at all hours, to supermarkets with 1,000 sq foot walk-in "beer caves", to church festivals that make a mint getting teenagers wasted on $4 pitchers to being able to carry your beer through airport security and onto the plane. Still, WI>UT booze access.

to being able to carry your beer through airport security and onto the plane.

But not bottled water?

That may have been the case at one time but it certainly can't be true now. If it were, every flight originating in Wisconsin would be treated like an international arrival upon landing out of the state, with the passengers quarantined until they clear security again. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen. The Wisconsin tavern lobby does not trump the ATSA.

Right. Aren't airport regs federal and not local?

Jaime "Dos Equis" Foxx.

EDIT: Oh man, Gonfalon beat me to it. Oh well.

Good to know that I've got a protective buffer. I'll have to save that for a special occasion.

The beer caves are great, though. They almost make up for the crazy blue law hours.
