ESPN: Johnson wanted four-year deal

There will be no long-term contract for pitcher Josh Johnson with the Florida Marlins this winter, his agent said Friday.

Agent Matt Sosnick told ESPN.com that negotiations between the Marlins and Johnson have reached an “impasse,” and Johnson expects to play under a one-year deal in 2010. Johnson will be eligible for free agency after the 2011 season, and a failure to reach agreement on a multiyear contract would probably force the Marlins to explore a trade before then.

“Based on our conversations, there’s no chance of doing a long-term deal with the Marlins,” Sosnick said. “We made it clear that it was going to be this year or it wasn’t going to happen. It was now or never. And the Marlins agreed.”

Johnson and his agents used Zack Greinke's four-year, $38 million contract with the Kansas City Royals as a framework in contract discussions. Sosnick said talks broke down when the Marlins declined to offer more than a three-year deal -- which would buy out only one year of free agency for Johnson. Sosnick declined to discuss any differences over money in negotiations.

Are you kidding me? This deal would have been great for the Marlins!

Assuming this is true, are they (Marlins) ####### insane?! 4 years at ~$10 million AAV is a crazy good deal. If Johnson were a FA he'd get way better than that, both in length and AAV. Words fail me.

edit: coke to tripon. I was quoting the article, not his quote of the article. great minds and all that...

This is exactly the kind of team friendly deals low budget teams like the Marlins should be making. They aren't even trying to be appearing to try. Why this team has any fans is beyond me (sorry T & B).

I find it somewhat peculiar that the player wanted the team to buy out an extra year of free agency and the club refused. It's usually the other way around.

Still, should JJ sign a 3/25ish deal that sets him up for life AND allows him to hit the FA market at age 29?
   24. Home Run Teal & Black Black Black Gone! Posted: November 21, 2009 at 03:59 AM (#3393212)
I gazed down at his enormous face. Seven years it had taken me to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the art dealer's visage. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two mojito-scented tears trickled down the sides of my nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. I had won the victory over myself. I loved Jeff Loria.

I thought he was just trying to keep it on Hot Topics for a while :)

I can see the Marlins' point in not wanting to go beyond three years. Johnson did have a significant injury that cost him the better part of two years and he does still carry some risk. Perhaps they could have been flexible - say three plus an vesting option if Johnson throws 175 innings in each of the three years, or something like that, or a mutual option for the fourth year - but when you are a limited-resource team you don't necessarily want to take that risk.

They simply don't have the money to retain their own talent, even at team-friendly rates. Not with the pittance the team currently receives from the league, at least. If only they could get just a bit more money assured each season, the Marlins could put together a solid team of exciting young homegrown talent and really give those great fans in South Florida something to cheer for! It would be good for baseball. I don't see a downside.

Did I miss something in this thread....

But isn't it conceivable that the Marlins could have this guy to this deal AND it make him even MORE appealing in a trade, being the fairly low nature of the price? Pitchers get hurt, yes, especially ones with a history of getting hurt. There's also a hell of alot of healthy guys who can't get anyone out.
   44. Walt Davis Posted: November 22, 2009 at 02:54 AM (#3393693)
I think I'm with Mike on this one. The Marlins have control over his next two years. He was outstanding in 2009 but in 2007-8 he pitched a total of 102 innings. In 2006 he was great although just 157 IP (and no time in the minors -- not sure if he was hurt or just being handled with care).

And it's not clear he's going to be all that expensive in his arb years. Due to the injuries, he was paid only $1.4 M in his first arb year. Obviously he'll get a big raise this year but not necessarily enough to justify that 4/$38 pricetag.

   46. Tripon Posted: November 22, 2009 at 03:18 AM (#3393709)
Walt, sure there's some risk into signing Johnson to a 4 year deal but this is the Marlins. They're not going to sign anybody worthwhile, and here's one guy that has huge talent and willing to sign what will be a below market contract for you if he stays healthy. Even as money grubbing as the Marlins are, they need to take these kind of deals.

Well, they overcame that by getting NYC to pay for a stadium, thereby erasing their revenue sharing obligations for the next while.

Its a good thing the City of New York negotiated free luxury boxes for all of their citizens in exchange for paying for New Yankees Stadium.

He spent the first month in the bullpen, which helped keep his innings down. He also threw his last game on September 12, apparently due to a right forearm injury, so it appears to have been a matter of both caution and injury.

To recycle an old Saints joke, they actually gave all the citizens free box seats between the dugouts, they just all came dressed as empty seats.

Couldn't you make a case that this contract makes Johnson more valuable? If he has another good year next year, then you have a young, good pitcher locked up for 3 more years at a reasonable rate. Every team in the league would be interested.

by getting NYC to pay for a stadium

The city didn't actually pay for the stadium, although they did pay for a bunch of infrastructure around it.

What they did is guarantee the bonds, so the Yankees could pay the muni-rate for borrowing, which is much lower. Of course, given the huge cash cow the Stadium, and the Yankees in general, are, there's zero chance the city ever pays a penny of the guarantee.

If the team wasn't paying the interest on the debt, i.e. if the city had just gifted them the stadium, there would be no reduction in revenue sharing.

Not that I support municipalities subsidizing stadiums, but just wanted to get the facts straight.
