ESPN: Lukas: Long live the bullpen car

If I hadn’t popped my drops when I was 14 to a girl in a psychedelic shack, I surely would have to Spakky Lyle tossing his jacket as he emerged from the Yankee bullpen car in ‘72…with “Pomp and Circumstance” monarhingly playing.

Historical details are sketchy, but the bullpen vehicle era appears to have begun in 1950, when the Indians introduced a car—described in a newspaper report as a “little red auto”—to ferry pitchers to the mound. The phenomenon really hit its stride in the 1970s, thanks to the advent of the giant baseball design, but it went through a slow decline in the 1980s and by 1996 had died out altogether, a victim of changing times and skyrocketing liability insurance rates. Here’s a selective breakdown of highlights from along the way:

1986: With happy fans spilling onto the field after the Mets’ division-clinching victory on Sept. 17, Mets fan and former Shea Stadium vendor Eric Bennett heads straight to the bullpen, where he hijacks the team’s bullpen buggy. He takes it for a brief outfield joyride before the engine conks out.

If only there was footage of that Mariner pitcher being chased by his bullpen cart.

Lukas is great. His blog, uniwatchblog.com, is one of the most readably esoteric sites on the internet.

the question is: what killed the bullpen car? The post-Camden Yards revival of natural grass, perhaps?

Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan famously says, "I could never play in New York. The first time I ever came into a game there, I got in the bullpen car and they told me to lock the doors."
Good advice.

Actually, I just realized that's why I always lock the car door when I'm driving (or riding) -- the family drove into the city a lot when we were kids, and my parents always made us lock the doors. I guess that just stuck with me.

That isn't standard? How provincial am I?

did fenway ever have a bullpen car? I can hardly remember them even on TV, (born in 79).

The car is only for White Sox pitchers, but the team later provides a black Cadillac, supplied by a local funeral home, for the visiting bullpen.

It would be awesome if Jacobs Field provided this for Eric Gagne.

Locking the doors while driving? No, I don't think that's standard.

They sure did. I remeber seeing an ad with Bill Campbell tooling around in it.

Spakky Lyle tossing his jacket as he emerged from the Yankee bullpen car in ‘72...with “Pomp and Circumstance” monarhingly playing.

Lyle parlayed it into a local commercial ("Datsun Saves")

then they switched the bullpen car to a Toyota, although Lyle kept doing the Datsun commercials; Scooter could never keep it straight ("Here comes Spah-ky in the Datsun.....I mean, Toyota")

i rarely lock my doors. If im in the 'hood I will. But otherwise - there's nothing of value in my truck. I'd rather they just opened the door to find an Alison Kraus CD, as opposed to smashing the window and taking it. One way I'm out $12, the other I'm out $312.

My wife makes a point to lock the doors when we're on long car trips, which I find amusing. Anybody who can run 75 mph and pull of a carjacking has earned the right to do so.

Some cars lock their own doors when you put it in drive. I think my last car (now deceased) was like that.

Huh, I thought it was standard too. Guess that's what living in NY will do to you. I also keep my wallet in my front pocket, which I don't believe is standard.

I never did it until I started going to college in "lovely" Troy, New York with my parking lot across the street from Troy High...

I also keep my wallet in my front pocket, which I don't believe is standard.

I've done this essentially all my life even though I lived in New Hampshire until college. Two reasons: because it's much harder to get pickpocketed, and because I'm not comfortable sitting on a wallet.
   16. Mirabelli Dictu (Chris McClinch) Posted: October 18, 2007 at 08:10 PM (#2582713)
I have never once locked my door while driving. I don't even lock it while parked unless my camera or something is in there.
   17. Greg Pope Posted: October 18, 2007 at 08:58 PM (#2582848)
Do any of you non-lockers have children? Locking the door prevents the kids from accidentally opening the door and flying out.

I can't imagine putting my wallet in my back pocket. Wouldn't it make it uncomfortable to sit?

Don't you engage those child lock thingies?

I always lock my doors when driving and parked, and I keep my wallet zipped up in the inside breast pocket of my jacket.
   21. Gonfalon Bubble Posted: October 18, 2007 at 09:09 PM (#2582866)
I put my children into my back pocket and sit on them, and I fill my car locks with super glue. This is standard where I live.

Locking the door prevents the kids from accidentally opening the door and flying out.

So, if you don't lock your doors, you will have your children taken away?

I tried it once. It does make it uncomfortable, I don't get how people do it.

I don't even carry a wallet anymore.

I thought locking the doors made them stronger in an accident.
   25. SoSH U at work Posted: October 18, 2007 at 09:28 PM (#2582883)
Don't lock while driving, make sure kids are buckled (which also prevents them from flying out - that and they're now old enough to know not to open the door while the car is moving). Don't lock when parked, unless in high-traffic location.

Wallet in back pocket. Always. I would think sitting down, and every other activity, would be far more uncomfortable with a wallet in the front, particularly since I don't actually sit on the wallet.

I'm not sure how you would sit down with a wallet in your back pocket without sitting on the wallet.

And someone once told me that unlocking them made it easier for the jaws-of-life folks to get you out after an accident. It's a dilemma :)

What motivation is there to not lock your car doors? You've got the key if you're outside; if you're inside you can certainly get out. The argument about it being easier for rescue workers to get you out after an accident might be a little compelling--I hadn't thought of it, and it's pretty hard to get car-jacked while actually moving. But locking the door when parked just seems like something ridiculous not to do, just in case. I'd do it even if I parked in post-WWIII Los Angeles masquerading as New York City. What if Charlton Heston should happen by?

I'm not sure how you would sit down with a wallet in your back pocket without sitting on the wallet.

The only way I can imagine it is if he wears pants like this, so that the back pocket is actually in the middle of the back.

The sight of Lyle in his Datsun was the first time I'd ever even heard of that car. I went out and bought one the minute my Volkswagen punked out. Couldn't find a pinstriped version, though.
