Probably ends his tenure as a Royal. He is 32nd all-time in rWAR among #1 overall picks.

Not counting recent draftees, the only ones worse are:

Paul Wilson
Delmon Young
David Clyde
Dave Roberts
Tim Beckham (recent draftee but probably won't pass Luke)
Bryan Bullington
Matt Anderson
Al Chambers
Shawn Abner
Danny Goodwin

Never made the big leagues
Matt Bush
Steve Chilcott
Brien Taylor

Luke could still pass Mike Ivie, Tim Foli, and Bill Almon if he can put together some decent relief seasons.

Figures. Floated between below average to terrible for years, then as soon as he found his place, BOOM.

Just when it appeared he reinvented himself as a stud reliever.

Dave Roberts was a #1 draft pick? And had less value than Hochevar?

Oh, not that Dave Roberts.

This is all of the guys on Hochevar's BBRef most similar list and most similar through age 29 list, plus their season age the last year they threw a pitch in MLB:

Shawn Boskie 31
Todd Ritchie 32
Paul Wilson 32
Chris Haney 33
Joe Mays 30
Tim Redding 31
Joe Kennedy 28
Nick Blackburn 30
Sean Bergman 30
Ian Snell 28
John Thomson 33
Shawn Boskie 31
Jason Hammel active (and 30)
Scott Elarton 32
Bill Dietrich 38
Jason Johnson 34
Brian Bannister 29
Mike Maroth 29

So an active guy, a guy who debuted in 1933, and then a bunch of guys who fell apart and were done at or shortly after 30. Pitching is a rough business.

That's a shame. Last year he seemed to really benefit from simplifying his repertoire and trusting his stuff. He finally finds a role he's successful in, and boom, there goes the elbow.

You've got to be good to lose 20 games in a season.

You've got to be good play for the 2003 Tigers to lose 20 games in a season.

As a Dodgers fan, Luke Hochevar spurring the Dodgers in 2005 draft so the Dodgers had the unlikely chance of drafting Clayton Kershaw is one of my favorite conspiracy theories.
