ESPN: Offerman gets lifetime Dominican ban

Jose Offerman’s career as a baseball manager was over Monday, at least in the Dominican Winter Baseball League.

The league suspended Offerman, interim manager of the Licey Tigers, for life after an incident Saturday in which he tried to hit American umpire Daniel Rayburn in the face. Offerman was arguing a batter’s strike count in a playoff game against the Ciba Giants at Quisqueya Stadium in the Dominican Republic.

Because of the incident, Rayburn and three other American umpires working in the Dominican league resigned and left the country, forcing the league to use native umpires in the league’s finals that start Monday between Cibao and the Escogido Lions.

Offerman is obviously a guy with serious anger management issues that he needs to try to deal with somehow.

So I guess he did whiff from 6 inches away.

In 2007, Offerman, a two-time All-Star during his 15 seasons in the majors, hit Bridgeport Bluefish catcher John Nathans in the head with a bat during an independent minor league game. .....
A court subsequently forced Offerman into anger-management treatment.

so THAT obviously hasn't worked..

may I humbly suggest an icepick lobotomy?

#3, what do you mean. Seems to me it worked pretty well. Didn't use a bat this time.

At his current rate of progress he'll reach Lou Pinella level of calm in another couple of years.

I read it as "Olbermann".

The Managers' Union will never let this stand!

The Dominican authorities did have a problem with a certain political commentor from the other end of the spectrum a little while back.

I've seen more believable falls in movies. Why did that ump fake getting hit? The so-called "punch" missed by 12 inches. Vlade Divac declared, "Now that's a flop!"

These umpires have to get over themselves. It's one guy acting crazy during one argument and they run from the country. I just don't understand the egos of professional umpires.

He stumbled. You might have too if Jose Offerman threw a punch at your face.

It says in the article that fans were issuing death threats.

Somewhere, deep in his cave, CHB chuckles and feels
vindicated.

Naturally, CHB would know.

Funnt thing is, Offerman was only managing the team because Dave Jauss just got suspended for two years a couple weeks back for his own aggressive confrontation with an umpire.

If only instant replay was available in the Dominican Winter Baseball League...
