ESPN: Olney:  Source: WBC to cover salaries

Players injured during the World Baseball Classic will have their salaries paid by the WBC organization while they are unable to play for their major league teams, according to an MLB source.

That would mean that players such as Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira and Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez will be paid by the WBC during their respective absences.

This just seems like a bad idea. I don't know how much the WBC made this year, but I'd guess that one Alex Rodriguez or Albert Pujols long-term injury could sink the entire budget.

Teixeira: "Ohh.... My arm! It's broken!"

So you send all of your overpaid and crappy players to the WBC and pray, pray like hell, for an injury. "Vernon, pack your bags. You are playing in the WBC."

Who funds the WBC?

The owners of the respective leagues that is participating(MLB, NPB, etc.). But in this case, its the insurance policy that the WBC operators took out that is making the payouts.

Agree with sleepy and ray. This is what this paper says:

the World Baseball Classic is administered by Major League Baseball and the
Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) (Schwarz, 2005)

But i have no idea if that means they are paying for it.
