ESPN: Red Sox tried to formally suspend Manny Ramirez before trade

A week before Boston traded Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers late last July, the relationship between the Red Sox and their left fielder had grown so contentious and strained that the club was prepared to take the extraordinary step of suspending its best hitter, ESPN has learned.

According to multiple sources, Boston management had drafted an official letter of suspension for Ramirez, and delivered it to him at Fenway Park at around 11 p.m. on Friday night, July 25. For the second straight game, Ramirez had refused to play that evening, and the Red Sox lost 1-0 to the rival New York Yankees in front of a boisterous and sold-out home crowd.

The letter informed Ramirez that the suspension was to go into effect the next day, Saturday, July 26. It said Ramirez was being suspended without pay for being unwilling to play. Copies of the letter were also sent to Major League Baseball, the MLB Players Association and Ramirez’s agent, Scott Boras.

...Within two hours after Ramirez received the letter of suspension, the Red Sox received two calls, according to sources. The first call was from one of Ramirez’s teammates. He told a member of Boston’s front office that Ramirez would play in Saturday afternoon’s game against the Yankees. Within minutes, the second call came in from Ramirez himself, who confirmed that he would be available for Saturday’s game.

Thanks to Barnald.

I watched this early this morning while trying to recover my hard drive and a week's worth of work done at home. The part that the excerpt is talking about is very meh. It feels like a hatchet job even if I'm pretty sure it isn't. What *was* cool was that they showed a 20 minute or so segment that they originally aired when Manny signed the contract that just ended. They had very exclusive access with Moorad, to the point of being in the hotel room when Moorad and Duquette were negotiating.

Moorad had a great line near the end when he says, "So, you'll do the $20 [million] per, if you can defer 2? (pause) I don't know what else to ask for. Except more money."

Oh my god, don't care, don't care.

I agree with Biff. This story jumped the shark in August.

More slime from the Sox FO. They messed up the relationship, wouldn't extend him at the ASB as he asked, and then spent the next month running negative publicity on him. MY knees hurt when I'm continually maligned in the media!

I can't believe that the breakup between David Ortiz and the Red Sox has gotten so vicious and personal.

(I'll be travelling extensively in 2010, so I figured I'd better post this now.)

They messed up the relationship

how, specifically?

I totally agree as well. Of course, there are amazingly still some doofuses at ESPN who are whining about the fact that Barry Bonds' career is over, so I don't think we're done with this soap opera just yet.

The Red Sox made their deal; they really need to get over it and move on now.

This changes everything!

For a guy who is "sick of hearing about Barry Bonds", you sure bring up the fact that you're sick of hearing about Barry Bonds in a large number of threads that have nothing remotely to do with Barry Bonds.

Joey's giving the crowd what it needs. Does Vanilla Ice take the stage and NOT sing "Ice Ice Baby"?

There's not much of a crowd on this story. The last twenty percent of the crowd consists of the two most annoying little schnoodles who never stop nipping at my heels.

DAMN YOU PETER GAMMONS AND THEO EPSTEIN

WHY MUST YOU CONTINUE TO PERSECUTE THIS GOD AMONG MEN

"Two annoying schnoodles" = print media, and television media.

He tries, but security gets to him before he disrupts the show even further.

I think you mean: Does Vanilla Ice release an album and NOT include two alternate remixes of "Ice Ice Baby" on the album, as well as opening AND closing the album with the traditional remix of "Ice Ice Baby"?
