ESPN: Reds to recall Aroldis Chapman

Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman is bringing his 105 mph fastball to the big leagues.

The Reds plan to call up the hard-throwing lefty before their game Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers, trying to strengthen their bullpen for a playoff push in September and beyond.
...
“I think Dusty will ease him into a role until he gets his feet on the ground, he gets accustomed to pitching up here,” general manager Walt Jocketty said in an interview. “Then depending on how he does, we’ll see how the role develops.”

There’s like 20 people in the stands in Cincy for tonight’s game.  What’s up with that?

And about 40 in the ATL for Braves/Mets game. Baseball fever...

105? Really?

I know Volquez hasn't pitched well, but if he and Chapman can just string together a few good ABs every other game, that's a lot of lightening in a bottle the Reds are going to have in that pen.

I get that, but a first place team that hasn't made the postseason in some time - and there's a Marlins crowd (12,000-14,000 actual human beings)?

(as an aside, the Brewers running at will tonight on Homer Bailey - a Randy Wolf straight steal? - reminds me of the Reds/Brewers game a few seasons back where the Reds ran at will on Sheets)

The Bengals are playing tonight.

God forbid a preseason game gets in the way of the first Reds season that's mattered in late August in some time. Very disappointing. Though I imagine there will be a significant bump for Aroldis tomorrow.

So any idea what the long-term plans are for Chapman? Is he to be a starter or reliever?
   10. NTNgod Posted: August 31, 2010 at 02:42 AM (#3630465)
Chapman returns to starting next season, Jocketty said.

This has been something of an ugly game (the Reds should have won easily, but a bunch of DPs and rather sloppy baserunning prevented that), so the people who stayed home didn't miss much.

Well, any Yankees fan can tell you that's a terrible idea.

I kept him on my team all year since the draft ( my pen is marmol rivera and arrdsma) i think it was worth it

So is tomorrow Chapmas?

So a hot young phenom is going to be a better draw than a pennant race?

Maybe the Reds should move.

They really have a #5 pitcher who's a better bet than Chapman to be effective in that role?
   18. Justin 'The Cespedobear' T Posted: August 31, 2010 at 12:20 PM (#3630564)
They don't need a fifth starter to beat the Cardinals. And also won't in the playoffs. They will, however, be able to use a lefty who throws 105 out of the pen in the postseason.

Before they moved him to the bullpen a month or so ago Chapman was having serious control issues. Maybe they should've kept him in the Louisville rotation to work on that and his changeup; that might've been the better long term move. But with the Reds contending this year, the only way Chapman was likely to contribute was as a reliever. Since moving to the Louisville bullpen he's been much stingier with the walks, going from about 2:1 to 4:1 on his K:BB. In the last 10 games he's struck out 19 and walked 3 in 10.1 innings. Lots of groundballs, too.

With Arthur Rhodes looking a big fatigued, Chapman could be a really important addition.

They better hope he doesn't throw 105, and it's just a fast gun/PR. I don't think the human shoulder or elbow can withstand that. His arm will explode.

There's a reason basically no one throws over 100 in the history of baseball; it's probably at the limit of human physiology.

Isn't that what they said about the four minute mile? And the 8 7/8 hat size?

Generally. There are always freakish outliers in human anatomy.

Official attendance listed at ~19,000, so a bit bigger crowd.

Chapman is now in the game, BTW.
   24. NTNgod Posted: September 01, 2010 at 02:10 AM (#3631380)
After his first pitch, they threw the ball out? WTF?

Third pitch at 102 (FSN gun is a bit hot usually)

Ended up with a couple at 103

Looked pretty impressive against the bottom of the order, then got removed for a pinch-hitter
   25. McCoy Posted: September 01, 2010 at 02:26 AM (#3631386)
how many people's legs exploded when they got close to 4 minute miles?
   26. hokieneer Posted: September 01, 2010 at 02:46 AM (#3631402)
7 of Chapman's 8 pitches were strikes. Control is his only major problem. If he can regularly throw strikes, he's going to be unhittable out of the pen.
   27. NTNgod Posted: September 01, 2010 at 02:54 AM (#3631411)
I understand why Baker brought him in when he did (8-3 game, 7-8-9 hitters), to gently ease him in.

However, it would have been more fun if he would have brought him in an inning later and see he him face off against the likes of Weeks/Braun/Fielder. Power vs. Power.
