ESPN - Report: HGH was sent to ‘well-known’ [Massachusetts] athlete

From the article:

The U.S. Attorney’s office disagrees, saying that Specialty supplied HGH for a “well-known” athlete in Massachusetts and an “entertainer/athlete” who received a shipment was 6-foot-5, 276 pounds (emphasis added), according to the New York Daily News.

Now, a quick look at rosters from the last couple years - the Bruins had no one who was close to that height/weight combo… Zedno Chara’s too tall and no one else was even close to heavy enough. Similarly, there were no suspects on the Celtics roster. There are a few Patriots linemen who fit that description, but no one of tremendous note. As for the Red Sox - is there anyone who’s 6’5-ish and sort of on the rubenesque side of fit who might fit the bill? Hmmmm….

Note - I have no idea who the “well known” athlete is, but I suspect its only a matter of time before that person is even more well known.

Well-known for mocking Rob Base because he was poor.

I'm not sure if owning a computer and having regular internet access counts as "poor." Maybe my definition of poor involves living in a shack with 8 other people in your family, with the youngest 4 children working in a toy factory, and having not seen your oldest sister for 4 years because she was sold into prostitution long ago.

Better that than the bottom half, crybaby.

Make no mistake; in my spare time I can offer reams of insight. But lord, do I hate Boston. Not just the Sox- the whole package. And unfortunately I've had to spend more time up there than I'd like in recent years, so I'm both intimately familiar with the so-called "city" and have felt my hatred grow stronger by the day. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to see the little children of Boston cry; and the only two ways I could see that happening is if (1) the Boston area was forced to desegregate its towns + neighborhoods from their present state (we know that will never happen) or (2) Ortiz is revealed as a big fat cheater (a man can dream, cant he?)

How do you feel about Hartford? Unlike the rest of the Sox Therapy crowd, I don't hate you, I really don't, but why are you 'zop instead of dzop? Are you that well known that people drop the d? I just find that curious.

I try not to hate people. Sometimes I'm not very good at it.

A myriad of reasons, not the least of which is that "dzop" is my email-alias, and I didn't want strangers/ potential employers to google my email address and find my Sox v. Yanks fights. On the other hand, threads like this mitigate that strategy-but I wanted to keep the "zop" ness of my name so that it didn't appear like I was trying to pretend I wasn't the infamous dzop who taunted Sox fans in IRC during Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS (still bitter).

I actually quite like Hartford. The Wadsworth is, literally, one of my favorite places in the world, and I'd kill for a Caesar Salad from "Carbone's" right now. In fact, I'd reckon that Hartford, despite being so much smaller than Boston, has
a) substantially better food
b) a better art museum
c) no Red Sox
d) no drunk, stoned BU sophomores riding the Green Line at midnight on a Friday.

Which is one of the many reasons why I actually kind of like Hartford, but absolutely detest Boston.

Better drinks, at least, as long as my brother is on the case

b) a better art museum
The Wadsworth is good, but I'm not sure if it has the variety that the MFA has

c) no Red Sox
Indeed, it's like the Alcase-Lorraine or the Poland of the rivalry

d) no drunk, stoned BU sophomores riding the Green Line at midnight on a Friday.
No trains, but it's not like there's many places to go after five anyways. I don't mind, but I'm no longer in my twenties. I spend my offhours trying to break the Rosetta Stone of, of Bill Virdon (long story).

Ah, but the quality in the Wadsworth...they have, IMO, the best Klimt in the USA, the greatest Hudson River School collection in the US (though I don't like their Bierstadts), great small works by Sargeant and Homer and Whistler... they have that Lincoln letter to Greeley ("I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free."). Also, a fabulous American decorative arts collection.

And the best part of it is that the scale of the museum is managable, and the attendance is light, so that you don't spend your visit bouncing from one tide of camera-wielding tourists to the other.

Not that anyone gives a #### about the museum, anyways. Red Sox suck.

There's a good chance I'll have 4 of those 5 covered sometime tomorrow night. BU sucks too much for me to make it a clean sweep, though.

(alas, I'm an A's fan, so despite all that, I'd still probably come off as relatively harmless.)

The firm distributed the drug to the unidentified Massachusetts athlete "pursuant to a physician request" around Jan. 2, 2002, and Oct. 24, 2003, the agreement said.
Not saying it was someone on the Sox... but if it were:

10/24/2003 = 1 week after the end of the ALCS. Let's say for the sake of argument that it was someone who was on the team by the end of 2004. Let's also say it was someone who was on the roster on 1/2/2002. Possibilities, then, include:

Jason Varitek
Manny Ramirez
Johnny Damon
Trot Nixon
Doug Mirabelli
Lou Merloni
Derek Lowe
John Burkett
Pedro Martinez
Tim Wakefield
Alan Embree
Casey Fossum

We also know from the infamous "Nomar dove into the water to save two women" thread that Nomar was still living in the Boston area in the 2004-05 offseason, so he remains a possibility. Same, I suppose, could be true for Shea Hillenbrand, but I don't know.

When I look at that list, the highest profile name I'd think could likely have been using was Trot Nixon. After that, I'd suspect Mirabelli or Merloni. (Casey Fossum on steroids? Imagine what he'd have looked like without them!)

It certainly could be Ortiz. But the more you actually delve into the poorly written accusation, the less likely it becomes.

The first athlete is well known in Massachusetts. Could be Ortiz. A lot depends on whether the delivery was to an athlete actually in Massachusetts in 2002 and 03 (which would rule out Papi), or delivered somewhere else to someone who is well known in Massachusetts now. We just don't have enough information, but fingering Papi among all of the possible candidates who would qualify under that description is guesswork. Better guesswork than say, targeting Adam Vinatieri, but guesswork nonetheless.

Personally, as much as I hope it's a Patriot, Bruin or Celtic (who I don't give a damn about) I'd imagine it was a member of the Red Sox (partly because these types of accusations only seem newsworthy if its a ballplayer).

It appears the 6-5, 276-pound guy is actually an entertainer/athlete, and not necessarily one with Mass. connections, which would all but rule out Papi. As entertaining as he's been, I don't think that's actually the job description on his W-2s.
   128. Gonfalon Bubble Posted: September 21, 2007 at 10:07 AM (#2535002)
The "oh God, please don't let it be Ortiz, not Ortiz!" reaction is risible. Even if this particular story has nothing to do with David Ortiz, the man already semi-hemi-demi-admitted to past steroid use four months ago. I know the media isn't interested in trashing Big Papi, so it was a 2-day "non-story," but I could have sworn that it happened.

Of course, the quote was deliberately vague, so there wasn't much you could do with it. Surely we'd see the same quiet, measured non-reaction if Barry Bonds had said, "I used to buy a protein shake in my country. I don't do that any more because they don't have the approval for that here, so I know that, so I'm off of buying things at the GNC back in the Dominican. But it can happen anytime, it can happen. I don't know. I don't know if I drank something in my youth, not knowing it."

Which is a roundabout way of saying, "He told me it was flaxseed oil." But then, Ortiz has always been the more gregarious interview, and that's what matters.

EDIT: I see someone did already.

? What's he got to do with Massachusetts?
? Have you seen the man in the last few years??? He's not nearly as big as he used to be. No way he weighs anything like 275 now, and honestly, no reason for him to want HGH anymore.
