ESPN: Rubin: Original A’s analyst discusses Alderson

That’d be Eric Walker…

He has been involved with baseball with a team as recently as two years ago with San Diego. So if anyone had the perception that things had passed him by, that the theories of 20 years ago aren’t applicable, it still works?

Absolutely. If you read a lot of what people write about analysis, or sabermetrics as they like to call it these days, you see an awful lot of all kinds of complex measures and all sorts of complex equation writing and so forth. But as I said somewhere a few months ago in an article I did for The Baseball Analyst, you mustn’t confuse precision with accuracy. And the fact that you can calculate things out to two or three decimal places doesn’t mean it’s particularly more accurate than what we did in the good-old days. In 1982 in my book, I had a formula that involved nothing but at-bats, walks, hits and total bases for predicting runs. And I just happened to look today. Its average accuracy applied to 2010—30 years later—is 3 percent. The most accurate formulas available, if you tweak everything and fine-tune everything down, you’re going to get down to 2.3, 2.35 percent. So the major principles are very clear, very straightforward. They still work. And I think that’s probably what Sandy is going to be looking at. Basically, he’s going to be getting guys who help produce runs. Or, if they’re pitchers and fielders, help reduce runs. You really don’t have to be very fancy with that. It’s not a question of being a dinosaur. I’m sure Sandy knows all the modern measures.

It’s not going to be like he’s a stat-head who comes in and says, “This is all we’re going to do, by the numbers.” But he’s going to let the numbers have an important voice, in my opinion.

I don't know if anyone was actually expecting Sandy to actually crunch the numbers himself. He delegates and manages.

Numbers are abstract concepts and do not physically have the ability to talk. Geez, get out of your basement and watch a baseball game sometime nerdlinger!

A sabermetrically-inclined GM should only need to justify himself with one phrase:

"In God we trust, all others must bring data."

The only numbers that matter are how much HGH the Mets players should take. Just like Bernie Madoff gave the Wilpons a flim flam spiel on how great a numbers cruncher he was to hide the fact he was a crook, Alderson repeated the con.

Bud Selig played the role of Bernie Madoff in the Mets' GM hiring -- the established and experienced voice on whom we can rely unconditionally. "If Bernie says it's ok, it must be ... If Bud says Sandy's the guy, he must be ..."

Good God, erstwhile King of Cotto Salami--the man is an effin' MARINE. Don't you EVER forget that!!!

(As if anyone would let you.)

He's made the freakin' free world SAFE for sabermetrics! He turned Billy Beane into BRAD freakin' PITT!!!

Bow, scrape, left, right, left!

It's good to see Don Malcolm around. I was on my honeymoon last week, so I missed the Backlasher thread, but BL reminded me a little of Don.

Years ago, I wrote a fan letter to Alderson. I found out that he went to DLI, as did I (but I never made it to Harvard Law.) He graciously replied back. I think this was back in the day when GMs were still relatively unknown. Rotisserie was around already, but more kids still dreamed of playing, instead of working in front offices.

My memory may not be reliable here, and I couldn't find anything on a quick Web search, but weren't Alderson and La Russa the guys who hired Dick Cramer to do the Edge 1.000 analysis tool that was the first of the sabermetric tools openly used in MLB? - Brock Hanke

"This is either a threat to be ignored or an offer to be accepted."

Even if he didn't mean it (and I think events showed he did) it's a great quote.

#15 - From a brief scan of Alan Schwarz' "The Numbers Game" (courtesy of Google Books) it seems that your memory is mostly correct. The A's were the first MLB team to purchase the services of the Edge 1.000, but that was before Alderson was GM. LaRussa was at that time manager of the White Sox, who became the Edge 1.000's second MLB customer.

At least, that's my understanding, based upon the except from Schwartz' book that I linked above. I'm sure there are others here who are much more familiar than I with how it all played out, and could thus provide more detailed information.
