ESPN - Runge apologizes to Manuel for Tuesday bump, ejection - MLB

ESPN is now reporting Runge has received a one game suspension. One game? MLB is going a little light on the bumpy ump.

On Tuesday, Runge ejected Manuel and Carlos Beltran for arguing a called third strike, and Runge appeared to bump Manuel before tossing him.

Man, Manuel was so P.O.ed at Runge he got that pigeon-neck thing going. You always know when an MLB manager is mad when they get that pigeon-neck thing going. I wish I could do that at work sometimes. :What, you transposed the number again you sonofabitch!" (pigeon-neck pigeon-neck, finger in the chest)

Quick Google suggests the typical penalty for bumping umpires is 2-3 games. Runge likely should have gotten more than 1 game if that's the case. I don't see why the penalties should differ.

Marcus Thames bumped one last night, we'll see how much--if any--he gets. Should be interesting.

Did Manuel threaten to cut Runge too if he ever did it again after he apologized?

I have to say, I like Jerry Manuel.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that Aaron Heilman has a June ERA of 0.75? He was miserable for the first two months of the season with respectable peripherals (excellent k/9, decent bb/9, and horrible home run rate) but has seemingly straightened things out. In addition, Duaner Sancez, whose velocity has wavered this season, had his best outing of the season last night. Two strikeouts in one inning, one of Ichiro, and he only threw 7 pitches in the inning.

Wilmer Flores went 4-5 with a 3b today. He's hitting .400 with a .994 OPS in 45 ABs. Brad Holt's line tonight for Brooklyn: 5IP, 0H, 1BB, 6K.

Not a bad start for a 16-year old. Fernando has been hitting well in the GCL and should be back up in AA soon. Church also played for Brooklyn and had 3 hits. He should be ready in a few days.

same reason that bumping a police officer is a bigger deal than a police officer bumping you.

I don't buy the police officer analogy. I'd liken an umpire more to a judge, a position whose occupants should be held to a higher standard. Though I'm sure many umps see themselves as enforcers rather than arbiters.

Ofcourse some denizens of this site think that being a police officer gives you privileges, and whether they bump you or taser you without cause, you should take it lying down.

Not a bad strategy during the confrontation, since he has a gun.

Word up! Next time you get bumped by a cop, swing a lead pipe at him. That'll teach...someone.

None.
