ESPN: Source: Hisanori Takahashi, Mets agree

The New York Mets have reached agreement on a deal with Japanese pitcher Hisanori Takahashi, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

Takahashi, a 34-year-old left-hander, posted a 79-66 record in 10 seasons with the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants. He attracted interest from the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres.

Takahashi had a 2.94 ERA in 25 games last year, while striking out 126 batters in 144 innings. He was regarded by many teams as a swingman, with the ability to both start and relieve. Takahashi is listed at 5-foot-10, 172 pounds and relies on finesse, with a screwball as his feature pitch.

Takahashi is the second Japanese pitcher to sign with the Mets this offseason. Reliever Ryota Igarashi signed a two-year, $3 million deal with New York in December.

Thanks to Turner.

What is it with the Mets signing crappy Japanese pitchers thinking they'll be good? Are we supposed to long for the days of Takashi Kashiwada?

Hisanori Takahashi, Mets agree: Kyle Farnsworth doesn't belong anywhere near a major league rotation.

Takashi Kashiwada

His nickname better have been "Kash Money".

I hear he's the Japanese Kaz Ishii.

I suspected it after the GMJ acquisition, but this clinches it: Omar Minaya has been secretly fired by the Mets and replaced with a Random Transaction Generator.

Masato Yoshii was good.

That's been it as far as the Mets and Japanese players go.

Yo, Shinjo rocked.

Masato Yoshii was good.

He was so good, they even wrote a song about him.

If the Mets can get Darvish and/or Fujikawa next year, maybe I'll get excited again.

Crappy Japanese pitchers are the new market inefficiency.

Since Satoru Komiyama was the "Japanese Greg Maddux", is Takahashi now the "Japanese Cliff Lee"?

Sounds more like the Japanese Jamie Moyer (circa 1992).

Wait, Moyer's not in his 50s yet? Go figure.

Anybody else throwing a screwball these days?

Danny Ray Herrera does.

The Mr. Koo experience was awesome. I remember two things about him. One, Carlos Delgado hit an 858-foot dinger off him because Koo thought he wouldn't swing at 3-0 and his awesome trek around the bases against RJ.

Obviously, I know that Koo was Korean.

Korean, Japanese, same difference.

at least it gives the Mets some entertaining factors while watching their struggles at .500 in the upcomming season.

FWIW, he could be the new Okajima

The Koo-Randy Johnson matchup was probably the best thing I saw at Shea short of the Greatest Catch Ever. Or maybe the double play at home plate vs the Dodgers in 2006.
